Regarding Charlie’s drumming in general, he seemed to very (very!) subtly rush the downbeat which drove most of the Stones’ rockers. I think that’s where the energy comes from.

He played very simply hardly ever dropping riffs. He always said he viewed drums as accompaniment and didn’t like drum solos. He really was sort of a perfectionist understanding that ‘perfect’ for him required simplicity.

I just read a short article about Charlie Watts walking up to Neil Peart back stage around 15 years ago. It would be interesting what he thought of Peart. Neil wrote about it in one of his books. Charlie was a hero of his.
