It *has* become a pain in the a$$ and I sympathize with the OP. It's needlessly complex and annoying. I've used a mac since 1984 (And apple 2 before that), and honestly I'm done with their computers and devices (maybe will keep an ipad pro for apple news mags, not sure that's available outside of them?).

I never want to ever have to enter an apple ID / password again, for me or any family member, and have 2 factor auth ping one of the 17 devices in the house (not sure which, outer uzbekistan maybe) to make sure it's indeed me repairing my kid's crap, or fall prey to their new OS that makes the mac look more like an ipad each time and cuts your speed in half (on OSX and IOS), the constant 'upgrade me now" messages, it's just too annoying anymore...

Took 24 solid hours to diagnose and repair a kid's 1y old imac the other w/e because their own hard disk checking tool would not identify a slow HD as the problem (it's all good sir !!!), and it was also clobbered by the latest OS upgrade. Once rebuilt from a new SSD with an older OS it flies again but that took so long it was pathetic - the device was taking 2 minutes to open a window!!! And still had to dance to the tune of Apple IDs (kid's, mine, wife's? family share?) and 2FA all over the devices to get that going also... The screentime app is crap and doesn't work well either... I get it, if you're a young geek and have noting else to do, it's secure - if you are the IT guy for your extended family and have 15 of them things, it's rapidly becoming a pain in the ass for me so forget my dad or old neighbor...

Same with phones... I like their interface more, but you can get so much more hardware for half the $ with non-apple, better lens, more space, and everytime you play a song it's not offering your to join apple music instead instead of playing from your library.

I've been an Apple user for 40y now (dating myself) and this was the last round of hardware for me, too much of a PITA now to be allowed to swim in their ecosystem.

Only thing I enjoy nowadays is apple news+ for the 20+ magazines I do read (for $9.99/mo) - for the rest they have jumped the shark.

Yea, know. I just want to copy a photo I took with my phone to my PC. I have a full version of Photoshop 2021 and a large super high resolution monitor. I prefer to crop and tweak a photo on my computer, and then do what ever to it.

If I plug in my iPhone and look at it like it is a hard drive called iPhone

I see 111 folders.Some of some of them have images, many are empty. It will only stay "connected" for under a minute before the phone kicks to computer off. I am sure it is for my safety.

And that is not using iTunes. It will not show me a picture at all. No way no how.

All I want is access to my phone and a picture I took! It is a total BS mess. Way easier to just email it.

Yea, I can do a backup to my computer and that does work with iTunes.

I don't care a whit about syncing my data between the phone and my computer. My email is all on Exchange, and my computer and phone all access the same Exchange server that I run for our company hosted by Microsoft.

I just want a simple logical way to copy my photos from phone to computer. That is not possible with Apple products unless I get a Mac. That ain't gonna happen. I have many programs that only work on Win 10 Pro or above.

Funnily enough, I can do that no problem on my Linux boxes. Simply have phone unlocked when plugging it in and immediately hit the "trust this computer" prompt, then enter passcode (fingerprint won't do it)

Those folders are all YYYY_MM, so if you know the year and month that you took the photo, you should be able to go straight to that folder, and once in the folder, you should be able to relatively easily figure out which file to copy (or just copy the whole folder or all of the folders) to your PC.
I suspect a different view in explorer would enable you to see the folders in a way that makes it easier to flit from folder to folder and see if they are populated with image files or not.

It looks like you've got an icon view in the main pane. A thumbnail view in the main/right pane or list view with a good tree on the left pane would be better.

Why don't you just sync every image on your phone onto your super powered work station?

UHM, that's DCIM, same result you'd get sticking in an SD card from every digital camera on earth, it's the standard storage structure for digital media.

Change your sort options if you want to see previews of your images.

Yep, pretty much every digital camera does the same. At least what he's got is organized by year and month.

When I take photos with my Canon, under the DCIM folder, I end up with something like
EOS101
EOS102
EOS103
....

Yep, that one is inexpensive. You can get a Motorola phone that costs more than triple what you paid. You can also get an iPhone that costs more than $1000.

The iPhone is probably much sturdier and better made. You're satisfied with your inexpensive Android, so it's the right phone for you, and, I'm sure, plenty of other folks.

That is just what I would expect. Except it will mix and match the images. I went to the latest file and it said no images. I took photos yesterday.

I have been using digital cameras since they first go to the point of almost equaling film. Now my cell phone makes a better image than the best film of old. We have a Canon 5DSr camera that is just unbelievable. 8688 x 5792 pixels. 51 megapixels. It makes an image better than a Hassleblad on film like VPS color negative film.

There are certainly merits to the Apple vs Android debate.

Neither is perfect.

But as someone who develops and publishes apps for both platforms I will never carry an Android phone as my communication device.

I toss apps on google Play and they can be available in an hour on the store.

Takes days to get through Apples QA and thats for not just V1 of an app but for every update after.

Not saying google does not QA but it's inconsistent and in my experience may as well be non existent.

If you are going to go android Please only install stuff from known reputable companies.

Every time I plug my phone to my laptop, I open up the iPhone folder and see multiple folders, but in no organized manner. I have not found a way to organize the folders/pictures in a chronological order.

My first smart phone ever was an iPhone 1 and I have photos from that far back. With every upgrade (I usually skip 3 or 4 versions) I just restore my backup from the last phone. I just wish there was some logic to the photos when connected to my computer. I have just copied all the photos and then sorted them on my computer.

What you guys are missing here is when you access the phone in this manner all you are seeing is the SD Card partition.

You should not expect it to work any other way than it does because that's how these partitions work.

If you really want / need full access to the full file structure you'll need a 3rd party utility.

My recent Apple experience on someone else's computer:
-I brought over a USB full of pictures. A few gigs.

-I dragged the file on top of a new named desktop folder.

-It instead copied the entire batch to another file named "pictures".
Wait. Wtf just happened?

-I could not find any links to that "pictures" folder in that simple GUI of colorful icons meant to simplify life for all Apple users.
They all just disappeared.
That is the exact opposite of "easy".

-Next thing you know..
A pop-up is there saying the 300GB hard drive is full and all this personal proprietary information needs to be uploaded to "THE CLOUD".

-It's a new computer.

-That person barely uses that computer, except for email.

-Even with a shyte-ton of downloading small files I have personally never been able to fill up even a 250GB drive.

When I was last at the Apple Store for a new battery for my iPhone 6, I had time to wander around in the store. Neat looking products, and I asked about the most powerful top of the line system they had available. It was a small box, no room for big dual video cards, and the RAM memory was really low. Of course only Apple parts would work in it and wow the prices were high.

I built my killer computer with 100% off the shelf easily replaceable parts for less money. Windows is a long way from perfect, and I cuss at it all the time. Here recently with every update it changes my power setting to be "green" and shut off the monitor in 15 minutes and reduce power consumption. If I wanted that, I will set it that way.

I have three computers at home. Only one is used all the time. If I fire up all three it is 50-50 odds if they will all talk to each other on the network. Sometime yes, sometimes it is a like three mad women that will not talk to each other. It really chaps my hide to have to copy files to an external drive to move them from one computer to the other. The next day all is fine and they are talking. It makes no sense.

Not sure what you were looking at but the last gen MacPro looked like small black wastebasket and had 16 PCI slots that would accept dual AMD Fire Pros and 1.5 TB of RAM. Yeah you could buy a Camry for what that costs but it's not a consumer device.

Apple does not make their own "parts". They make systems that accept 3rd party add on like RAM, GPU's, drives, PCI cards, like any other hardware manufacturer of PC's

Mine are for small scale objects, not large geographic areas like yours but still, 128 GB Dual RTX 2080 $4,500k boxes.

Recently picked up a 1st gen MacBook Pro M1 laptop.

The (Beta) OS has a photogrammetry stack included.

Re-running data sets I've previously run on my Windows boxes the M1 is as fast if not a bit faster and actually renders a better model in 16GB of ram and no CUDA requirement.

We are talking about a beta OS with a beta photogrammetry stack on a first gen Chipset all in a box that costs about the same as a single RTX 30xx series card.

These new M series chips are insanely fast and efficient.

The full blown Desktop Pros are going to be killers.

There is no such thing as a 300GB drive available in any Mac so it was either 256 or 512.

It's not possible for the few gigs you dropped on it to fill up a new machine unless you dropped more than a few gigs on it.

My USB was checked with WinDefender and Malwarebytes first, so my side should be good.

The consumer definitely was definitively not a heavy internet user.

You have highly specialized needs. Apple is in business and not marketing to every possible use case. Comparing your rig and needs to what Apple makes is a little silly.

Apple does and has made their stuff to be stable, reliable and long lasting. They make software AND hardware. And their stuff actually works really well. I had a coworker that had a 7 or 8 year old Macbook that just would not die so he could buy a new one. My experience has been that the hardware is very well made.

Microsoft primarily makes software, Windows, and designs it to run on almost anything (even the cheapest, Chinese, knock-off, basic chipset, compatible hardware that you can find or imagine. They actually do a pretty amazing job too.

I'm pretty sure that you couldn't have gone to Microsoft and bought a work station that did what you wanted it to do.

You can upgrade most Apple stuff with aftermarket RAM (I've done it a few times).

The current top of the line Mac will accept up to 1.5 TB of RAM, and can be had with up to 28 cores of XEON processor and this video setup "AMD Radeon Pro W6800X Duo." The biggest limitation for your work may be the limit of 8TB of SSD.
