$W&*%^#$& up yours apple

So forever ago I got an iphone 'cause it was the best at being Just A Phone and had a form factor I can live with (small and slim). Still happy with the physical device....

But ... I just wiped my SE 'cause I didn't have enough room to install a newer iOS.

Farking Apple auto-set up 2 factor authentication on my Apple Id (without notifying me, giving me an opt out, etc) and set it to use the one and only apple device I have....

So now I'm stuck at the set up screen and can't receive the farking text for the two factor auth. Never mind my strong password and email verification I've already done....

So I had the message sent to the wife's phone. And now I get a message that it will be up to 24 hours to update the recovery info and confirm that it is in fact me.

Yep, it's doubly awesome when you USED to have an old apple device (a laptop) and you switch to a PC and it tries to authenticate to the one you no longer have.

Absolutely, positively sucks ass.

And you should bow down and worship Apple for allowing you to have their proprietary technology and equipment.

I'll never understand why a person would want to pay Apple almost double for a smartphone.

All you need is a daughter that works at the Apple store who can keep you up to date on all the shiet you need.

She says it's worth it.

My iPhone 6 refused to update. Halfway through and it would error. Couldn't use apps as the os was no longer supported. Switched to a Samsung and have not been happier. The battery life alone was worth it.

Still use apple for the laptop. Back door tails when i need to. No issues.

Yes, blessed be it that my iToy is workplace-provided. If I couldn't just hand it over and say "fix it or I aint using it" it'd have been used for a skeet shooting target long ago.

Honestly though it's been almost (and I mean barely) reliable. Better than the high-zoot Dell workstation on my desk that refuses to run the many-kilobuck-per-month software that I need to do my job. That one is working towards an "office space" experience in a field pretty soon...

I’ve been using Apple products for over 30 years and for most of that time I was happy. But I have to say, between iTunes and the iPhones I’ve lost confidence in their engineers. The fact that they are moving more and more into entertainment and financial services doesn’t bode well for the future of their hardware.

2F is usually tied to a trusted phone number which is almost always the number for the device used to set up the account.

Swap sims with your wifes phone.

iTunes is without a doubt the single worst piece of software ever written. It deliberately makes things difficult, cumbersome and just frustrating to use. I only use it to back up my phone to my computer. It is worthless for photo sorting and even totally useless for videos or movies.

Never buy a iPhone with the minimum amount of memory. They don't have the memory to do an upgrade to the latest iOS updates. With more memory it is pretty easy.

stealthn 08-30-2021 05:54 AM

All phone makers (and Telcos) suck, I’ve got three Droids I can’t upgrade (or get security patches for) because the Telco chose not to support them anymore (more money in new devices).

I had to downgrade from a Galaxy Note 8 to an IPhone 6S (spare). I bet I never leave my phone on the trunk again. Luckily, I found it, run over several times, and was able to get the sim out.

I h8 this Iphone.

That's weird. I don't think I've ever had any company setup 2FA without telling me.
And there's usually something you can do, an email, a website, something. But you are IT savvy, so I hesitate to say "you're doing it wrong."

Apple phones aren't double any other phone. Can you get cheaper stuff, yes, but there's usually a big difference. Get the top of the line Android and the top of the line Apple and if they both have similar capabilities, I suspect they are going to be similar prices (ignoring subsidies from carriers). You can get much cheaper phones (and there are cheaper versions of iPhones) but there's going to be a big difference in those and the top of the line expensive models.

Weird, you've never mentioned that before. You and the iTunes hate is almost like Paul and his mustangs and pool cues. "Single worst piece of software ever written" seems like hyperbole. I do remember many years ago (15-20) when we got our daughter her first iPod and I put iTunes on her PC and mine, yes, it was really attrocious. It wasn't too long before it got a lot better, and the last time that I used it (which was years ago) it was reasonably decent.

I don't think it's designed to be a cataloging software, and us old guys are probably not the primary target.

I'm running a Mac now as my PC. I really dislike the software evolution there. It has actually gotten much worse since I moved to Mac. It reminds me of some of the changes that have been made to Office over the years, "we need to change they way you do X, Y, and Z, just so we can say Office is different." It's still not remotely the worst piece of software ever made.

I'm now using her old Iphone, same carrier, same bill. For some stupid reason she and our son like the apple product. She now has a 10, I think he has a 53 or something like that.

For some silly Apple reason, I got a log of all her calls, and received all texts. Well, she's not cheating on me, but seeing her family banter got old. I figured that out, and no longer can I "spy" on her, until the bill comes... which I don't even look at.

id10t 08-30-2021 07:12 AM

So apparently if you boot a new phone up and have no wireless or cell service available (easy to do at my house) you do get the option of continuing without setting up the apple id **** first.

So now I'm in... and phone is working, etc

Hopefully within the next year or two one of the attempts at a Free phone will become real enough for me to Switch.

Anytime I try to install a new app, I get asked the same question. "What's the cloud, or email"or some other BS password. Seriously?

Download the siht already.

They want to ensure that someone hasn't stolen your ID and is "buying" (even if they are free) apps.

There should be a setting that you can set that makes things easier.

OK, yea maybe not the worst of all time, but the worst for any GIANT company that requires me use it just to back up the data on my phone. They deliberately and with malice and forethought, make it challenging to use. I have movies I made and they are in MP4 format. I put them into iTunes and tell it to sync those to my phone. The movies are not on my phone, or they are hidden and not viewable.

From high school days to now, all of my jobs have involved photography, and only photography. I take a lot of pictures and the iPhone 11 Pro. With three lenses and amazing clarity it is just astonishing what it can do. To get them onto my computer the easiest and fastest way it to email them to myself! Really!

If I hook in the USB cable and have the phone as a device the photos are listed by some random number and stuff from years ago is mixed up with the recent photos. There is totally no logical way to see the picture I want to transfer to my computer. Of course they are all backed up when I do a backup, but those files are not accessible as individual photos. It just makes no sense except a deliberate obfuscation by Apple to make it hard for no reason.

Backing up is different than syncing data.

They serve different purposes.

Because you are using HER itunes account, not your own.

Create a new account under your name.
