Thanks. Very enjoyable. Noticed the plug for Ely match ammo....

Wow, that was good - thanks. Well used and well maintained equipment with plenty of human involvement. No wonder their guns are so good.

Very cool video. Anschutz is about as good as they get for rimfire and air gun match rifles. I love that straight pull bolt as well.

That said, from a hunter's perspective, these sorts of firearms are just too precisely fitted, a bit too complicated, too fussy and delicate. 50 parts to the trigger mechanism alone? The Model 70's I used to bring to Alaska had two...

It's one thing to use the rifle at 20 below over the course of a few hours on a single day. I bet those things are bone dry, without a trace of any kind of lubricant to be found. That will work for that one day, after which it is carefully stripped and cleaned.

Try taking one to coastal Alaska for two solid weeks of rain trading off with snow, crossing salt water inlets in john boats, and living in a wall tent, never fully drying out. Those are tough conditions for a rifle. Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate all that these biathlon rifles represent, but I think they are vastly over selling their "ruggedness". They are anything but, compared to real world hunting (or military) rifles. Very cool sport, though, and I'm glad they are still doing it in this day and age.

Hard to beat the M-1 Garand for rugged...from Omaha beach to the battle of the bulge...it's no wonder Patton himself called it the greatest battle weapon ever devised.

That said, guys at our local gun range can post up some amazing groups with 10-22's that have been worked over..bull barrels, target stocks..

BTW Jeff..I passed your mobil one as a gun oil tip to a class A license holder here...he said he's going to try it. No report back yet.

Impressive video. I'm just glad there are still companies making stuff like this.

Is he hand tweaking the barrel here? ... Imagine the skill set to do that!

It's great to see an out of the box accurate gun.

Guys buy a cheap gun a replace just about everything on it, at big expense, to try to make it as accurate as an out of the box Anschutz. The workers in the factory are engineers and gunsmiths. And for real world shooting (90% of us) they are very good.

Loved the video, really interesting

err Jeff, it's high precision rifle designed for one specific job, the design has been honed/improved over decades, does exactly what it's designed and built for

Seems like they've nailed the 'ruggedness' well enough to win many Olympic gold medals but at the cost of not being the perfect tool for shooting an angry, charging bear on a beach in Alaska while it raining

Comparing it to a hunting rifle is a pointless comparison, like comparing a F1 car with a 45 ton mining dump truck

Absolutely, I could not agree more. I have nothing but respect for the people at Anschutz and what they have accomplished. There really are none better for the intended purpose.

Yes they have - a perfect example of a "purpose built" tool. They have a very specialized, very narrow set of design parameters that they have met exceptionally well. Like I said, I have a great deal of respect for what they have accomplished.

I think you missed my point.

I'm not the one "comparing an F1 car to a 45 ton mining dump truck" - the producers of the video are doing that, I'm merely taking exception to their efforts to do so. The producers are presenting these rifles as extremely rugged and reliable under the most adverse conditions any rifle will ever see, presenting these Anschutz biathlon rifles as this "45 ton mining dump truck" of the rifle world. That is simply not true. They are, really, the "F1 car" of the rifle world, demanding similar care and attention to keep them in "running order". That's all I was saying.

Excellent retort, really enjoyed reading that

I want to go shooting with you one day, trying everything in your armoury as I know nothing about spoons

I would love to do that. It might take more than one day to go through the whole inventory, though. If you ever find yourself in the Seattle area, let me know, and we will do it.

There was a guy up in Pahrump that had 5000 guns stored in a Quonset hut when he died.
