S2000 vs 87 911 Targa

Purchased my 87 Targa in 2009 and was immediately hooked. The driving experience, the porsche community, weekend road trips, autocross, and my competitive nature turned the "slippery slope" into a full blown "Avalanche". Most of my free time was consumed with PORSCHE related activities. Any downtime at work was spent reading Pelican threads and scanning the classified ads for parts on my wishlist. Finally after eight years of ownership and probably over $60k spent on maintenance/upgrades (scared to add up invoices) I have the 911 of my dreams. Now Im contemplating the unthinkable, "replacing" the 911.

It feels almost blasphemous typing, but Im thinking about replacing the 911 with a 2005 HONDA S2000. The S2000 has always been on my bucket list and this week I came across a one owner, showroom condition 2005, with 1,650 verified miles on the odometer. A real time capsule, had to buy it!

Now this is where the confusion kicks in. While I'm excited to own two examples of the finest cars Porsche and Honda produced, the reality is I only have a garage and time for one car.

So here are my options:
1. Sell the 911 (even with the spike in the air cooled market, will still take a loss).
2. Place the 911 it long term storage, $300 monthly storage cost and 20 miles from my home (will most likely still there all year not driven)
3. Place the S2000 in long term storage and hope the value increases more then cost of storage.
4. Keep the 911 and flip the s2000 (putting any profit away for a rainy day).


Opinions......?

Can't help with which decision you should make...but I do know that the S2000 is a great car. I'm assuming you already have it and have driven it for a while? Two diff types of cars, but both a lot of fun. I'm very partial to Hondas ...their engines are bulletproof.

S2000 is way more fun to drive. It's cheaper to maintain, and very trouble free. I miss mine. 911's are almost getting too precious.

I'd keep both, for the time being--- rent the storage -- swap them over every month -- after 6 months to a year you will know what works best for you

Mate, why would you give up being part of the crew that bought a Boxster to an Air Cooled only event, driving in freezing weather to Tennessee in a day, getting repeatedly lost in Nova Scotia, Sunburn at AX, Parking lot abuse in Vermont, getting pulled over by a cop who tells you he's been chasing you and your friends for three exits, Nutcases letting of fireworks when you walk in their shop ... and so many other great adventures !

4. Flip this particular S2K and buy another with a few more miles and then pocket the profit (and spend it on the 911.)

In all seriousness why not use the storage as a rotational thing. Park the 911, drive the S2K, then swap. See what you are more drawn too. Overall I'm bummed out because if you do sell the 911 It won't be the same driving without having to stop in rain storms to put your roof on ...

I don't understand this post. Trade one of the most famous sports cars in the world with it's special smell, (oil , gas and leather) twist the key and the motor and fan come alive in the rear with that one and only sound, drives and turns like no other for a Japaneses car?? The Porsche 911 has won more races than any other car in history. GAK! I'm sick.

I'm in one of those pictures, so I feel qualified to answer. I've also been beaten multiple times at different Autocrosses by you and this car, so again, I consider myself qualified.

Sometimes, mistresses call and we all must answer. Honestly, I think if one must go, you should sell the Targa. You've been talking about it for months and you've gotten a lot out of the car; maybe it's time to move on.

There are many more years and cars ahead in your future, I'm sure. I do think you'll miss the autocrosses, the trips, the Porsche Parades and the people, but if you work at it, you'll find there are great people throughout the car hobby in general.

I also predict there will be another Porsche in your future, but that doesn't mean there aren't some really great cars out there to try and to own meanwhile. Why not?

Get the Honda (they're great) and a four post lift. You'll regret selling the Targa.

I had an 86 Carrera Cab as my 1st Porsche and sank money into it as I auto crossed also, in S. FL. I wore her out and she became unreliable and expensive to 'race'.
I test drove the S 2000 , at the same time, when it 1st came out and was disappointed in the plastic interior and lack of torque, which made if 'feel' slower!.
It did not have the smell, classic feel and character that a 911 has.
So it can never replace a 911 (IMHO)
If cost is an issue, hang on to the 911 - as they are unlikely to drop in value (or fun) and drive the S2000 as a cheap sporty runabout.

The Targa - really looks 'sorted' and you WILL regret selling her.
I have regretted selling all of my Porsches, but have made money on all but the 1st one, as only kept her a couple of years (whilst I upgraded her for the next lucky owner!)

Just my 2 cents (or 2 Euros now!)

I've owned / own both.

The Honda is a great car. It does everything better. It's a little sterile and the feel compared to a Porsche is lacking.

I'd keep the 911.

But I wish I had space for an s2000.
