Anyone Familiar with Modern BMW Motorcycles & Canbus

I'm trying to install a dash cam on my 2021 R1250RS but I am having trouble finding a "switched" power source that is compatible with CanBus. I thought I could tap into the accessory socket that is near the seat but when I connected, nothing happened.

I'm going to try again by hooking up to a spare 12v battery just to make sure the unit is working correctly. Next, I purchased a Power Distribution Module (PDM60) which I will use to provide the final power but it still needs a "switched" power source.

Also, any good ideas for ground. It seems like everything under the seat is plastic or powder coated with plastic shielding. Uggg...I wish this could be a little simpler.

Anyone have any photos of their setup? I'm not having much luck on the internet.

Maybe look into a can-opener like this. https://denalielectronics.com/pages/denali-cansmart-canbus-controller

No! Order what is called a “repair plug” from BMW. No idea why it’s called that. For about $25 you can plug directly into the Nav harness likely located underneath the gas tank. It is switched power on a 3 minute delay. So when you switch off the bike, power to the camera shuts off 3 minutes later. On my K1300S it was below a panel on top front of the fuel tank. On my R9T it’s tie wrapped to a frame tube on the left side of the tank. Find a forum covering your model….I’m sure the info is there. If not, stop by a dealership and ask one of the techs.

I’ve done that on several BMW bikes from 2012 to my current 2019.

I'm going to look into the "Repair Plug" that was mentioned on this thread. The PDM60 that I ordered will handle up to 6 accessories but regardless, it needs a switched power source which the repair plug may solve. I don't have many accessories but I do plan on having the dash cam and I will eventually get some auxiliary Clearwater lights.

This sounds like the fix. I’ve always wanted to try out a K1300S. Looks like a beast of a bike.

Just note that circuit is not going to run a heated jacket…it’s low amperage for small electronics…like a GPS or digital cam.

The K13S was one of my favorite bikes of all time. I had two K12S’s before it. Comfortable for long rides, enough raw acceleration to make you puke in your helmet, brakes like the hand of God himself, perfect ergos and easy on the eyes.

My PDM60 came in the mail yesterday (Wow! Ordered it the day before). This will definitely supply the correct power as it is hard wired directly to the battery and then uses the aux power wire as a switch. It enables you to run 6 devices at 5-20 amps depending on which circuit you use. At this point, the only thing I will be hooking up is the dash cam and probably an outlet for the radar detector.

Speaking of dash cams....I had a heck of a time finding a spot to mount the rear camera. I ordered about 10 different goPro mounts and one of them will work. It's near perfect but could use some modification so I am going to have my shop at work make me exactly what I need. It's very handy to work for a factory where we have several fabrication experts

Definitely a beautiful bike with ridiculous power.
