More Craziness - Deck Stain

When did I move to a Third World country? I pressure washed my deck yesterday in preparation for re-staining it, as I do at the end of every summer. Today I went to my local Sherwin-Williams, as I have done for, oh, 20 years or so, to get a couple of gallons of deck stain/sealant.

They laughed at me. "Pfffft... we haven't seen that schitt all year. Good luck..." So I drove all over hell and gone (otherwise known as "Lynnwood, WA") and finally turned up a couple of gallons of schitty-ass Thompson's Water Seal at a Fred Meyer store. Last two gallons they had on mostly empty paint shelves. I applied it today, even though I know better, since it was the only game in town.

What on Earth is going on? Tires, deck stain, even milk at the grocery store. My old Czech riding buddy, along with one of my wife's former employees who immigrated from Poland, tell us this reminds them of "home". Neighbors calling one another when the store has butter... What the hell has happened here???

I ordered my deck oil online. The Log Home Shop. Free shipping. Hopefully this is just temporary glitch. I’ll be needing tires for my truck soon.

Used diesel engine oil thinned with diesel.

Use it to stain my trailers and deck. Looks smashing and good for the environment.

I've had literally no trouble getting Armstrong Clark deck stain through Kelly Moore over the last 2 summers for my new fence/deck projects.

Maybe it's a SW thang.

Fortunately it will deteriorate quickly enough that when Jeff scores some better product it will soak in. IOW, given time, it won't hurt.

I haven't noticed any shortages here unless it was an item on sale at a good price. People will empty the shelf by noon.

Maybe that tells us something.

I' using "Preserva" oil stain on a newish cedar fence. On the shelf at Home Depot. I have 240' of fence to do, at least. More if I do both sides of every panel.

Please tell me I don't need to also use sealer. Well okay....if I do need to use sealer then tell me. Later, after some cocktails.

Absolutely. Last resort. I'm hoping Zeke is right and Mother Nature takes care of it before next summer, so I can blast what is left of it off and put the real stuff on again. It just has to get me through one winter.

I've heard that some contractors have started keeping their own stocks of untinted base because of this.
Crazy times.
