COVID-19 Vaccines Effective Against Delta Variant – How Pfizer, Moderna and J&J Compare

COVID-19 vaccines are effective at preventing hospitalizations and emergency department visits caused by the Delta variant, according to data from a national study. That data also indicate that Moderna’s vaccine is significantly more effective against Delta than Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson.

“These real-world data show that vaccines remain highly effective at reducing COVID-19 related hospitalizations and emergency department visits, even in the presence of the new COVID-19 variant,” said study author Shaun Grannis, M.D., M.S., Regenstrief Institute vice president for data and analytics and professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. “We strongly recommend vaccinations for all who are eligible to reduce serious illness and ease the burden on our healthcare system.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s VISION Network analyzed more than 32,000 medical encounters from nine states during June, July and August 2021, when the Delta variant became the predominant strain. The results showed that unvaccinated individuals with COVID-19 are 5-7 times more likely to need emergency department care or hospitalization, similar to the overall effectiveness prior to the variant.

The study in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report is also the first analysis from the VISION Network to show a marked difference between the effectiveness of the mRNA vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer). In the study’s time period:

Moderna was 95 percent effective at preventing hospitalizations among adults ages 18 and older.
Pfizer was 80 percent effective at preventing hospitalizations among adults ages 18 and older.
Johnson & Johnson was 60 percent effective at preventing hospitalizations among adults ages 18 and older.
The study also found that vaccine effectiveness is lower for people 75 years and older, which has not been shown in previous research. This could be due to a range of factors, including the increased time since vaccination.

When it came to preventing emergency department and urgent care visits, analysis showed that:

Moderna was 92 percent effective.
Pfizer was 77 percent effective.
Johnson & Johnson was 65 percent effective.
Scientists say these findings need further monitoring and evaluation.

“Despite the differences in effectiveness, vaccines continue to offer much more protection than not getting one at all,” said Dr. Grannis. “While breakthrough cases do happen, data shows the symptoms are less severe. The vast majority of COVID hospitalizations and deaths continue to be among unvaccinated individuals. COVID-19 vaccines are powerful tools for combating the pandemic.”

The VISION network, funded by the CDC, includes seven organizations that contribute and analyze data from U.S. healthcare systems to learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness. In addition to Regenstrief Institute, other members are Columbia University Irving Medical Center, HealthPartners, Intermountain Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and University of Colorado.

“Interim Estimates of COVID-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Against COVID-19–Associated Emergency Department or Urgent Care Clinic Encounters and Hospitalizations Among Adults During SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617.2 (Delta) Variant Predominance — Nine States, June–August 2021” is published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. In addition to Dr. Grannis, other authors on the paper are Elizabeth A. Rowley, DrPH, M.S. of IU School of Medicine; Toan C. Ong, PhD of Kaiser Permanente Northwest; Edward Stenehjem, M.D., MSc of InterMountain Healthcare; Nicola P. Klein, M.D., PhD of Columbia University; Malini DeSilva, M.D. of HealthPartners; Allison Naleway, PhD of Kaiser Permanente Northwest; Karthik Natarajan, PhD of Columbia University and Mark G. Thompson of the CDC COVID-19 Response Team.

The first post in the above thread cites greatgameindia.com. A quick search shows they are not credible in the least. I'm wondering if there a "snopes" type of website that rates sites for quality of information or disinformation. Any thoughts on Newsguard?

It will not matter a whit what site is quoted, someone will call it a propaganda site. And most of the anti-vaxers have their minds made up. Nothing at all, nothing, will change minds on the issue.

Vaccines rid the world of Smallpox and polio and dozens of other deadly diseases. Right now if the mumps had a resurgence lots of people would refuse the vaccine, and it is a bad thing for an adult male to get.

I will be getting my booster shot as soon as possible. I get a flu shot each year. I am a believer in vaccines, and I am a life long skeptic of all mystical thinking.

Agree with you. I got my second Pfizer shot on 5/1. It'll be interesting to see if getting a mix and match booster is the way to go.

I was having dinner with my girlfriend (an RN) and a doctor friend of hers. After dinner, he walks up with what I thought was a plate of desserts or apertifs. I was a plate of flu shot syringes. I took one, and ever since then have gotten a flu shot every year. It's been probably 40 years since then and I think I had a mild flu once for 2-3 days. A win as far as I'm concerned.

Me too. You and I both get the same vaccine. I'm at home all day never interacting with anyone, my percentage is going to be about 100%. You go maskless to every large event you can and mingle. Your percentage is going to closer to 0%.

Edit- the percentages have to be an average over many being compared. So they're an indication.

This is one of the problems with the breakthrough infections that people seem not to understand. The majority do not get sick, or have almost no symptoms. They are only detected with random testing.

So there is the 'vaccinated, positive, but not tested group' and the 'barely any virus' group, ten cycles to test positive, versus thirty.

Because all the vaxx pushers need to make it a political issue ( trump, con, "Q', etc...) when someone is against getting vaccinated. Just not being comfortable with it at the moment, isn't good for them.

I had Covid. It was pretty much a non event for me.

One day I probably will get one. But not until the info stops changing minute to minute.

If you've had COVID, getting a shot is probably not needed.

I weary of feeling bad for the dying (of covid)

just last week, I got a reminder. my wife's acquaintance just died. she was VERY pregnant and only up until recently, the vaccine was still in question for pregnant women. that has been cleared a few weeks ago. but this lady, 37 years old got Covid and they put the tube down her throat to help her breath. just to keep her alive so they could do a C-section to save the baby. mom passed shortly afterwards. totally sucked.. 8 kids in total. (Brady bunch thing). she wanted the vaccine but was trying to careful for her unborn baby. sucks..

I feel awful for the dad/husband.

but we have the tools.. believe what you want, but I am so shocked by our society. imagine if they (today) said, we have the vaccine that would save your life, and eliminate from the planet a horrible disease..but it will leave a tiny scar on your shoulder... people would revolt. FAACK that S! I'm taking a avian feather mites dust..but you have to sniff it. lets do this!!

another story. a friend and coworker kinda turned on me last week.

we have to wear masks in the office. so be it. so I put on on when I walk to the printer. the guy said I was an idiot..a sheep. he followed me into my office where I usually shut my door and take my mask off. he was mask-less and just badgering me. he went on saying in a few weeks the new governor would take away the mask mandate anyways.

then he said, "besides what are you worried about? it was your people that brought this "kung fu" to our country.

hahahha..and I considered this guy a buddy. (no more). my boss heard and asked if I was okay. I'm cool. but I do wonder about a person that has so much internal problems that what another person does on his own free will bothers him so much. there is no vaccine for that affliction.
