It's been a while since I have been there and not sure how thing are now during Covid but right across the river is National Harbor, MGM casino, The Gaylord and various other hotel, restaurants, etc.
Some great places down on the waterfront. There was a little pub that dated back to the 1800's maybe earlier? Great little historic town to just walk and sight see fall into a place for a bite and a beer. |

I don't know Alexandria THAT well, although I lived in NoVA for many years and visited sometimes. Certainly take a couple of hours to walk the waterfront, go through the Torpedo Factory, and walk the shops around King St., Cameron St., etc.
Other areas nearby that are nice to see: Mount Vernon (George Washington's home), Del Ray neighborhood, Arlington Cemetery, etc. Are you limited to Alexandria? You can easily get to these places and into DC/Georgetown on the Metro. Dinner ideas? Too many to mention. What do you like?

Thanks all. We'd be up there for afternoon/dinner on Sat. Mainly looking for local eating recommendations/or cool shops. Stuff to do within a reasonable distance of the old town waterfront/historical district. Ideally, an outdoor place to catch a cool fall evening by the water.
Mt Vernon is a great idea, but my wife and daughter just went there! argghhh. - because I would like to see it. Haven't been there since I was a kid. She might be open to a re-visit. Gaylord/convention center is a cool place. Went there precovid for a CE event. You don't forget a name like Gaylord. My grandparents had a house in Lincolnia, right off Duke street, so I remember as a kid going to Alexandria/ watching trains at the Amtrak station. Been years though. Our hotel is right down near waterfront, and my goal is to try to do as much as possible on foot. Thanks again. |

Great suggestions above.
Virtue Feed and Grain is in an 1800's building. Honestly, too many restaurants to mention. I would also recommend biking the Mount Vernon Trail. You can get electric bikes here and many other places: https://www.visitalexandriava.com/listings/pedego-electric-bikes/7456/ Perfect time of year, btw. Enjoy!

Just walk up and down King Street. Lots of good places.
My personal fav is The Warf down at the bottom end near the river. Sorry Seahawk, but I wasn't a fan of Feed and Grain. Too much of a ladies lunch place.

I try not to make specific restaurant recommendations...I do not have a sophisticated palate in the least.

I forgot to mention. There is a free Trolley that goes up and down King Street from the Metro station to the river. Good if you don't want to walk the entire thing.
There is also a version of Georgetown Cupcakes that is good.

Hank's Oyster Bar is also very good. A little more casual.

Dad used to live in Old Town years ago. Rustico is decent for a low-key lunch and beer. Wife and I would walk over for brunch/lunch on weekends after a night out.
Vaso's Kitchen is phenomenal Greek, chill homey feel. There was a great French/American place we went for our anniversary in 2012 or 2013, and I can't remember it right now. Just sent my wife a text, if she remembers and it's still open, I'll come back. |

Private club, but you can buy a day pass for $50, I believe. Bring your A game...

Isn't the Chart House still there? That'd have to be the best waterfront dining in Alex. Not cheap and probably need reservations, but it's pretty good.

Wow! My wife and I stayed in St. Michael's one night on our honeymoon. After seeing your post, I asked her if she looked into Maryland for places, and she said she only looked up the lower part of the Eastern Shore. She looked into all points within a 2 hr radius of where we are at. We were trying to keep the drive within a 2 hr limit, but, really, coming over the bridge to Easton St. Michael's area wouldn't be too much more of a drive now that I look at it. We need to go back there!

Go into DC and hit the Smithsonian museums and national gallery of Art. Also if you go up to Baltimore, Brewer’s Art is outstanding, and it’s basement bar is killer, and Baltimore Museum of Art and the Visionary Arts Museum are both phenomenal.

This morning, I'm writing down all the suggestions and will take them with us. Rained here last night, but has stopped. Hopefully weather will hold out. I'm a big time cyclist, but my wife is not, and perhaps we might even rent her an e-bike, or two for both of us, and I won't have to mess with my bike. Oysters will be devoured. Thanks again!
