Maderna, Pfizer or J&J?

Which jab do you prefer and why?
From my limited research, the M and P are different than the J&J.

Talk to your doctor.

I think the mRNAs provide better protection and it seems like I've heard more about not feeling well with the Moderna, so my choice was Pfizer.

cockerpunk 09-14-2021 10:11 AM

i didnt have a choice, ended up with pfizer, and i felt not good the day after the second shot, but not terrible.

partner #1 has J&J, shes not happy about that to this day, but its worked.
partner #2 has moderna, same symptoms/side effects as me.

red-beard 09-14-2021 10:14 AM

J&J is a modified virus from primates which will not cause disease in Humans. It had the spike protein added. Astra-Zeneca and the Russian Sputnik vaccine are similar.

Moderna and Pfizer are mRNA vaccines. They utilize a mechanism in our bodies to have cells produce the spike protein which we then have an immune response.

All of them prevent severe cases of COVID-19. Moderna and Pfizer both produce more anti-bodies than J&J, mostly because of the 2 shot regimen. When J&J is given as 2 shots, it hits the same levels are the mRNA vaccines.

Moderna vs Pfizer: Moderna has a higher level of "reaction" because the dosage is higher and the shot spacing is longer. Moderna also appears to be better against the newer variants.

All of them have some "complications". If you have any health problems, discuss the potential adverse reactions (heart issues, clotting, etc.) with your physician. They can identify the best one for you.

Any one is better than none.

At this point are we still limited to those 3 and only those 3?

For the record I had the Moderna with no ill effects.

red-beard 09-14-2021 10:19 AM

I had the Moderna. Both shots I had arm pain for a day (side-effect). After the second shot, I had fever and chills for about 6 hours about 24 hours after the shot.

I am in the Phase 3 Moderna trial and my antibodies are being tracked. I am trying to transition to the "booster" trial which is the new shot for the variants. I talked two friends into the study as well. One of them just had the "booster". He said it was like shot #2 again.

And again, by booster, this is a new vaccine, not a "third shot" of the same.

Yes, those are the only 3 that have at least an emergency use authorization, at the moment. Pfizer was given full approval. Moderna and J&J are about 1 month behind in getting full approval.

Novavax finished phase 3 studies and is on the way to being authorized. I am not sure why Astra-Zeneca was not approved in the USA. Some have said it was "politics".

i got jabbed in the frenzied time. i think they thought i was a teacher.
just kidding.

i just took the dose they gave me. i didnt get a choice, that i know of. i got the Pfizer..

billybek 09-14-2021 11:04 AM

I just had another jab.
My first was AstraZeneca no problem with it other than being tired for a day after.
Second was Pfizer. Same result as Astra.
The province offered those who expect to travel to countries that require proof of vaccination and will not accept mixed doses an opportunity to get a third jab and now I have documentation of two Pfizer vaccinations.
With the numbers of cases on the rise again, I figured having a booster 4 months after my last wouldn't hurt. I hope...
On sabbatical this year and do hope to travel a bit.

Are any of the jabs better than having had it, and recovered? Please, no war here, there are other threads for that.

red-beard 09-14-2021 12:19 PM

Honestly, over in PARF I posted some studies on comparing "natural" Covid antibodies and the mRNA vaccines. The mRNA produced more antibodies. But the "natural" had a more varied antibody profile. They both "work". But the end result is the vaccines are going to be improved to produce the other antibodies as well.

If you already had it, you should probably be OK. OTOH, the WSJ had an article a few months back that showed people who had Covid and then had the vaccines, had the most robust antibody profile.

Z-man 09-14-2021 01:59 PM

Overheard by someone in the know: "The J&J vaccine is the government issue cheese of vaccines." That's not to say it doesn't work. A friend of mine is in the medium risk category, and he got the J&J Vaccine, and then he also got COVID. All he had to deal with was what amounted to a bad flu. Was down for less than a week.

If your doc is ok with you getting one of the mRNA vaccines, then either will work. Fascinating technology. I got the Moderna jabs late Jan / early Feb, and a couple of weeks ago, I had my anitbodies tested. The results: my antibodies are pegged: they are higher than the maximum levels of the blood test. They do say that the Moderna vaccine is slightly more effective than Pfizer.

Bottom line: All three will greatly reduce the single more important factor: your chances of dying are significantly reduced. To me, that was motivation enough to get vaccinated.

How old are you?

Old enough to be watching my retirement portfolio a bit more closely.... ;)

I had the Moderna. Fever and nausea on the second shot. I do have to say, I don't know if it's directly related to the vaccine but both me and the Wife have experienced random joint pain 3 months after getting vaccinated.

My boss got the J&J and just came back last week after contracting COVID. He had fever, fatigue and coughing, nothing severe.

I am curious about this comment. I’ve not seen any details about the booster and from 3rd hand info though a friends doctor and nurse friends it’s labeled as a 3rd shot.
So the question is, is this a new mixture specific to combat Delta? My kindergarten understand was the mRNA versions of the vaccines could be more easily modified to combat variants. I am curious to read more info on this if you have any sources.

Thanks,

CTopher

red-beard 09-14-2021 03:01 PM

Yes. This was developed to cover Delta and other variants. I am trying to get moved over to that trial and hope to join it in October. In that trial, they will be trying a mixed Flu+Covid booster.

Sooner or later 09-14-2021 03:13 PM

My understanding is that a 3rd dose today is the same as previous doses. Trials are underway to be more effective against newer variants.

This is from July 8th
https://investors.biontech.de/news-releases/news-release-details/pfizer-and-biontech-provide-update-booster-program-light-delta

Pfizer and BioNTech have seen encouraging data in the ongoing booster trial of a third dose of the current BNT162b2 vaccine. Initial data from the study demonstrate that a booster dose given 6 months after the second dose has a consistent tolerability profile while eliciting high neutralization titers against the wild type and the Beta variant, which are 5 to 10 times higher than after two primary doses.

While Pfizer and BioNTech believe a third dose of BNT162b2 has the potential to preserve the highest levels of protective efficacy against all currently tested variants including Delta, the companies are remaining vigilant and are developing an updated version of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine that targets the full spike protein of the Delta variant. The first batch of the mRNA for the trial has already been manufactured at BioNTech’s facility in Mainz, Germany. The Companies anticipate the clinical studies to begin in August, subject to regulatory approvals.

My daughter and I had the Pfizer vaccine. We both experienced just a little soreness like a sore muscle at the injection site. The day after the 2nd shot, I felt a little tired but that was all. I had taken the day off from work in case I had any issues.I got up that morning, had some breakfast, felt a little tired and took a 3 hour nap, woke up and felt fantastic!!! My wife and son both had the Moderna vaccine and after the 2nd shot they both experienced chills and did not feel good for several hours the day after receiving the 2nd shot.
