no time to ride my MTN bike - so i jogged.
my longer commute in general really ate into my after work ride time. shorter daylight hours are not helping.
this weekend my dog had way too much energy. he poked his head thru his harness and we were off. i tried jogging. i did 2.5 miles both days, and Hank and i did great. i run to a park with him holding a frisbee, and we then play catch..while i rest. ![]() my legs are noodles today. i really need to get back into jogging. FAACK. i am a lazy slob in my 50's. hahha..

Even with all of my issues (reduced lung capacity, new pacemaker, multiple meds) my wife and I still get out there at 56 years old, and play a weekly frisbee golf round, bike, and hike. Sometimes when we are camping, we also take our kayaks.
ANY activity is better than no activity, so you may think of yourself as a lazy slob, but I would love to be able to jog even a mile ! |

After that, we ran a little here and there and gradually tailed off on our exercise. The missus started running again 2-3 weeks ago. She spends a bunch of time at our daughters watching the grandsons. She's been running there. Sat she said "I'm going to go running, do you want to come?" I didn't really, but I did it anyway. My calves are killing me and have been. Coming down the stairs the past 2 mornings has been horrible.

Nothing is going to fix damaged muscles. A hard deep massage right through the aching muscles will help nurse it back to health a couple days faster. Good for you boys on getting out doing a young men sport. I stopped riding completely since covid two years ago. A little mover a month ago, I started riding again. After three weeks of riding, I went out with the group on a training ride, only to get beat up again. This past Saturday, I went hard, but was only to hang on half way through the ride. Slowly, I am getting further and further with them. I know, after 50, if you don't use it you WILL lose it and it takes forever to get back in shape.
After the ride this Saturday, I came home, laid down on the floor trying to stretch my legs. This was around noon. I fell asleep instead, and woke up only to discovered wife and kids went off to lunch and left me there on the floor sleeping. I was awaking by the slamming door at 3pm. |

I think its age. Plus, training and racing in the past 30 plus years had changed my view on cycling. Its not just brute strength, but more then 50% of it has to do with training your head to not give in until there's just no more left and still dig deep to get out the last drop of energy to keep going until you puke ( yep, bridge the gap). Oh yeah It isn't fun but we learn to suffer and know how to do it well. I can still get out and hold 17-20 on the flats with some rollies for 20 miles but the race pace training rides are just too much with speed well over 30 mph on some roads and avg speed is 24-25 for the entire 50 mile ride.
Don't know about you, but I can't power climb anymore unless I put in lots of miles. I am talking about, 35- 40miles into the ride, a 1/4 mile uphill, off the saddle climb hurts me each and every time unless I put in 150-200 mile a week then I can go up it with less effort. Riding 80 miles a week jsut doesn't cut it anymore at our age. I know a couple of dudes in their mid 60s hanging with the whippersnappers. Of course, they no longer have the pure speed when the jump goes but they hang on ok. Those are the older guys that were winning all the local races back when I was a kid when they were in their prime. The answer is to never quit and continue doing it ever if over 50. Time is the issue with most of us. At one time, I was thinking about racing again, Masters. I miss it. Maybe one day? I realized that guys in their 50s are super fast still, those old bastards have the time to train and by now, they know their bodies well, so they take advantage of that from years of experience. Not sure how long you have been riding, but keep on doing it. Spin easy gears and put in the time and distance, base miles. The speed will come. |

I think walking is great, if you just want to keep your weight down and get the blood pumping. When we were in Asia, a couple years ago, We were walking up to 4-7 miles daily yet, we ate like pigs. Loads of carbs, rice and noodles were eaten daily with different varieties. My wife is on the skinny side to begin with, we lost weight at the end of the month. If I ate like that back home, without exercise, I would have gain another 5 lbs in 30 days.

I use thing call "The Stick" to aid muscle healing quicker.
https://www.amazon.com/Physical-Therapy-Original-Massage-Stick/dp/B000YDO1NA/ref=asc_df_B000YDO1NA/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198069016725&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13453643724850012762&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030984&hvtargid=pla-320468415785&psc=1 Different color means different hardness. It hurts when use properly to get blood flowing through muscles. On those days when I really kick my ass, that's the first thing I do when I get home. |

Noticed how hard he press it against his legs. The Stick is bent a bit but I think the Red is a bit softer then the black or blue. I have the black and that thing hurts when you are sore at the same time, it feel so good. |
