30 years ago today - Nevermind and Blood Sugar Sex Magik released

Two of the best albums of my youth were released 30 years ago today. Really blew me away. I think they've stood the test of time pretty well :headbang:

Just watched the Nirvana documentary a few weeks ago which encouraged me to buy a copy of Nevermind since I lost my original and buy a copy of Bleach since I'd never had it.

First I listened to Bleach to get an idea how they started. I only listened to first few seconds of most of the songs since they just weren't very good. Then I listened to Nevermind and was once again amazed at how their sophomore album was all hits.

Pretty neat what Kurt's mom says in the documentary about the first time she heard Nevermind.

Nirvana was after my early 80s primetime, I had already been married for 4 years by 1992.

First album with John Frusciante on guitar.

He really elevated the band.

Still sounded like Chili Peppers, just the best version of Chili Peppers that there had been to date.

Definitely a classic album. Frusciante did play on Mothers Milk previously though. That too is a classic IMHO. I saw them in 1990 in Houston. Mothers Milk had recently been released. Meat Puppets opened for them. Great show. Frusciante did a cover of Elton John's "Your Song" and a super version of "Castles Made of Sand". He's one of my favorite players for sure.

I picked up both CD's the same day at Sam Goody's Sep/Oct that year in Springfield, VA. I was an early teen and my dad had to drive me there and buy them for me. Glad my dad was open to my choice of music.

Being a Seattle (area) - ite, I really got into the early grunge thing. Not the dress, not the sub culture, but the music. I was in my mid 20's by the time it had started, in my 30's by the time Nevermind was released. So, by all rights, this "kids' music" should have never appealed to me. But, after the lethargy that was 1980's music, and having grown up on very "alternative" rock (if it ever made the "Top 40" I just wasn't interested), this new "grunge" thing really caught my attention as something new and different. Finally. I caught all of the "big" Seattle bands at every opportunity. My now 30-something sons can't believe it - "dad, did you really see XXXX live? Like in person? Holy crap...".

Funny, they both went to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers about ten years ago. When they started talking about some concert they had gone to, I asked them who they were talking about. Their answer was "aw dad, you've never heard of them".

So I said "try me".

"Red Hot Chili Peppers".

"Oh, ok. Great band. I saw them before you were born..."

Best of the 3 albums listed, by a wide margin. Badmotorfinger was just wicked, with ripping bass lines left and right.

90's music is kinda overrated, me thinks

compared to what came out in the 70s its crap

AC/DC was in utero in the early 70s, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen...

I got out of the Navy in the early 90s, went to engineering school and jumped right into the rat race so I didn't have time to pay attention to music and pop culture.

nevermind

Hahaha, yep, me too!!!

Didn't really like Nirvana all that much but Red Hots were awesome!!!
Rick Rubin produced Blood Sugar Sex Magic and it has his style of one song flowing right into another, which was super cool.

Man I cannot believe it has been 30 years, crazy, seems like just yesterday. I remember when Blood Sugar Sex Magic dropped, and we were all like, this is such a wild sound, still sounds great to this very day. Nirvana just sounded like noise. Soundgarden was mind blowing with the psychedelic sounds, maybe it was the acid, lol, and Jane's Addiction was a whole 'nother level!!!
Now I know what I am gonna listen to tonight after my football games. Have a few beers, put on the "over the ear" wireless headphones and drift off into another world!!!
