I have resigned to just ignore the fact that now days, most movies are going to have the female Rambo type they can suffer through any abuse, but then whip all the men in a room, but she will emerge looking pretty with lipstick, makeup and hair looking nice, and likely smelling like a rose.

The same thing happens whether the fighter is a man or woman. You see men get hit in the face/head with a fire extinguisher, brick, wall, pipe, etc..., and the fight continues for another 5 mins. The fights are unrealistic for the men and the women. So why is it only unrealistic fights involving women that seems to bother you?

Here , as a small token of understanding his point I present a slightly altered clip of what rsguy refers to, and yes this requires a massive dose of "COLOR="DarkGreen"]yeah, ok, sure that could happen"[/COLOR].

note: whomever created this clip looped the punches A LOT.

Star Trek has ALWAYS been horribly unrealistic. And that clip is what, 20-25 years old, so not the result of "woke" culture.

The *real* core of the problem is that world building within franchises are getting destroyed.
People who follow those franchises with passion have investment in a consistant world.
It kills off what would have been a commited customer base that would buy anything within the franchise.
Not just the movie or books; but dolls, models, posters, rugs, etc...
It's a big phat not welcome sign to spendy customers.

It isn't just about having a female fighter or a female lead as there have been succesful franchises in the past based on this.
It is about failing to write within the framework that came before.
Throwing it in the trash.

And a step beyond that, the re-write often trashes some favourite characters.

The contention is that if the framework isn't going to be respected why ru(i)n the franchise or name?
Why not create some new franchise for the new framework?

John Wick would have been dead or severely injured in the first 10 minutes of the movie.
That didn't stop me from enjoying the hell out of it.

The same can be said for Odysseus.

Suspension of Disbelief is just that. Relax and enjoy the movie.

Eating popcorn and watching the butt hurt in this thread is probably better entertainment than the movie will be.

But, I hope not, being a long time lover of the Dune Chronicles.

I can't imagine being wound so tight that a character representation in a movie would be enough to ruin my day, hahahaha..:D

Imagine the head explosions going on when it's something really important, and I consider myself to be a Sci-Fi, LOTR, Dune geek..

I just bought myself the complete Moorcock Elric series first DAW printings that had never been read, LOL.. Reading Bane of the Black Sword now, hahaha. I love going back in time to some of those magical weekend mornings, reading my books and getting lost in imagination.SmileWavy

OMG! I had almost all of the Moorcock Eternal Champion books (various series for the various incarnations of the Champion) that I'd read as a teen. I assumed I'd be able to buy them again if I wanted them, so I downsized them away. I was bummed when I discovered that they were NLA. The fact that you got the whole series like that is very cool! It was one of my all time favorites. I'm super jealous. When I used to buy my sci-fi/fantasy books, I often started by looking at stuff put out by DAW.

Paul really didn't pull it off though did he? His son went on and iirc that didn't end well either. So, no savior after all?

In the context of Dune (that is, the first book), Paul is most certainly a "white savior." Outside privileged cisgendered white man arrives and helps indigenous people overthrow yoke of oppression is classic White Savior storyline.

I've only read Dune and Children of Dune, so I'm not sure how bad Paul's son screws it up, but things are already turning sour by the end of the second book.

In 1984 three of my friends and myself went to the opening of Dune at the theater.
We didn't know anything about the storyline, but were excited after seeing the trailer.

We walked out at the end confused. Not one of us understood the whole thing.
Definitely a 'read the book first' movie.

I had lost about half of the books I had bought in the late 70s early 80s in one of my moves.. I was a bit broken up about it at the time.. All I had left of that series was 'Stormbringer'. I had been going through and re-reading a few of my books lately and was like, I need to get the rest of those and I lucked across an auction. Was really surprised when they came in. Literally all of them first DAW printings and you could tell none of them had been read. One still had a book club insert in it.. Same model as the Columbia Record House club.. There were three of the Runstaff books as well, same condition. Need to find the first though..

He was very prolific and I'm finding a lot titles that I never read from him.

Also a big Anne McCaffrey fan.

My wife just laughs at me...:D I told her that I'm going to start reading my Gor series books to her out loud...in bed....one book at a time.;)

If someone were inclined, it is possible to download pretty much every Moorcock book in electronic format. I wouldn't feel too bad as they are NLA.

I tried reading "Dragonriders of Pern" once. The series and author seemed popular. I just couldn't get through it.

I read a bunch of other stuff. Most of what I read was fantasy, but I also read some sci-fi.

Shaun @ Tru6 10-07-2021 11:50 AM

I LOVED Dragonriders of Pern! Those and Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea series when I was a wee tot. Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series when I got older, deeper and darker.

Want to know the best thing you can possibly do to your wife in bed?

Read The Little Prince to her.

I read all the Michael Moorcock books back in the 70's.
I still have them in boxes in my basement, along with the Dune and Foundation series and all the works by Cordwainer Smith and EE "Doc" Smith.

I have been wondering what to do with them.
Guess it's time to reread and see if they hold up.

That would be the one with Kyle MacKachlan. Yeah that one was so compressed that it would be confusing for anyone who hadn't read the books.

The short TV series was a bit better.

stevej37 10-07-2021 05:04 PM

^^^ Thanks...that makes me feel better about it...lol
The visuals were great...just didn't follow the story line.
We still joke about it, when we meet up, even though it's been almost 40 years back!
