..as in horse chestnut ?

Is there a 'mini' version of these chestnuts?

The shelled two-piece meats on my driveway are about the size of a macadamia nut ?

^^^ Not sure. As a kid at home, we had a Beech Chestnut tree and the nuts looked exactly like the ones in the pic.
I remember that we tried to crack them open to eat them....impossible.

Them's some really big nuts ya got there, Steve!
And..a lot of them!

Maybe I need to find the right person/manufacturer.
A guy who does furniture for firearms will be interested in that tree.

To harvest the nuts they lay out tarps and shake the tree, would make it easier to collect them. Maybe you could find a food bank that would be interested in the nuts

The tree is 9ft around....too big to shake.

It's really hard for me to think of having the tree removed. It's at least 70 years old and it's next to the road and would be a big open spot if removed.
Before the nuts and leafs start dropping...it's a beautiful tree.

I was 'gifted' at tree of similar size.

Finding a saw mill to process it was not worth the effort.

The people who are saying it's super-valuable probably haven't done it. Maybe with live edge wood being popular now it could work out, but I would not touch it even for free. It's cheaper and easier to buy walnut from a distributor.

Is it worth it to tend the dropped nuts every week before mowing?? I don't know.
I don't mind the exercise...but it's time consuming and must be done.

Horse Chestnuts and buckeyes are poisonous, There are a lot of varieties of chestnut including Chinese, American, and Allegheny chinkapin, The American Chestnut went almost extinct in most places. The Allegheny chinkapin (several spellings) is the small one (tree and nuts) and are common in the southeast (while only a few American Chestnut trees of size still exist).

If you wait for them to start to turn black, then the hulls come off easily...although you should probably wear gloves as they stain your skin (we didn't have gloves where I grew up and my hands were black as tar in the fall. I used to spread them on the gravel driveway (once they stared turning soft) and let the cars slowly run over them to remove the hulls) Also kills the weeds in the driveway as they are herbicides.

If I didn't live a million miles away, I would come haul all of those away for you. That is a lot. I would be cracking those by the fireplace all winter. People used to steal mine from under the tree...they were so valued where I grew up. Never had/seen that many from a single tree.

^^^ I'm up to 15 wheelbarrows full so far. Each wheelbarrow holds 6 cu feet.
I think I'm over half-way through the drop...but I could be wrong.

As they get buried in my pile by others...they rot.
So...I have a 5 foot pile of rotting walnuts covered by two feet of this years walnuts.

Almost all from one tree.

You are more than welcome to take any or all the walnuts that you like. I'll help load them up!

We have a black walnut tree in our front yard that spans out over most of our house roof and entry. Bumper crop this year, filled with worms and ants like last year I assume. Squirrel eats them and leaves the remains at the top if the stairs. I have to sweep them away just to get up the stairs and into the house.

They fall all night on the roof, got used to it and sleep through it.

^^^ A lot of mine fall on the road. I hear them getting hit at night. They ricochet off the tires into the underside of the cars and sound like an explosion...lol

You are right...this year is a bumper crop.

Watch out for this winter season.
