Why do you suppose that folks who are ostensibly adults can't have a civil discussion
You see it over and over again.
It is not all subjects, but you sort of know when you see the title. Like Zoltan said in his thread about it, you see the title and know it is going in the crapper PDQ. There are always a few pro and a few con on any subject that go overboard. Even a few years ago on this website you did not see this stuff. WTF is wrong with people nowadays? PS-I have a very strong opinion on this, but did not want to discourage discussion.

I had a pretty ugly conversation this week with a family member of a client. They are trying to help which is nice. However, the perceived shortcoming they had of my service was because they assumed something was being done when it had not been discussed other than in general terms and certainly not paid for.
That's a long way of saying their version of a prior discussion was one thing and mine was another. So just a misunderstanding of scope of work and also of how the justice system operates. Add in that some of the discussion was telephonic and some was via text. I did pretty good keeping my cool while the guy kept right on swearing at me. I told him at one point his actions were very rude and not helpful. He finally calmed down. (the actions in this line of text is a new thing for me, usually I'd just give it right back) In the end the guy actually apologized. I was a bit surprised since in my experience that is a rare occurrence.

Useful thread here. (Sarcastic). I’ve found that on the off topic forum people start to have a civil discussion and then someone either writes something offensive or they report something as offensive. It’s then sent to parf where people can be as offensive as they want. Having been banned from parf, I can say that I want no part of that space and I fully accept the mods decision to send a thread there.

I think it is less about anonymity, a common refrain, than the ability to just be gratuitous.
Very civil thread about the subway violence devolves into why Glocks suck. Really? Inane and gratuitous. Serious thread about a young man being shot by police becomes a fairy tale of how people here with ZERO experience would have handled it. Gratuitous banalities. Rick Lee’s great thread on his experiences and some exile from polite street craps all over it. Sing it with me. That is my take. Now go feed your f’ing dogs. |

Egos, everyone’s inherent need to be right, inability to rethink the intangible beliefs that they hold true, etc.

I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries.

Sure Nick, I know just what you are talking about, and that is a nice example of inability to be civil. In that case, a moderator offending someone enough that they left for a month.

lol!!! You didn't leave for a month. You got a two week timeout for saying that to a mod. Who are you trying to bullsh.t here? Like I said, you get what you give. Don't whine about a lack of civility when you're part of the problem my friend.

It is the Canadians.
They always argue for no reason and poop on the threads. In all seriousness I feel like there is a lot of angst right now in general. I fly a lot for work and precovid I never saw anyone getting upset on an airplane. Yeah, folks would mutter something under their breath, but I have seen multiple instances of Karen's and whatever the term is for male Karen's yelling at passengers for all kinds of idiotic things. If people are that wound up in person it is even easier to do it when you are pretty much hidden. I have met Pelican members in the past and there are a lot I would still like to meet. Bill |

The point is, we are part of the problem and solution. Trust me I know, I did my part as a complete DH at times. Back on Track.

We're all part of the problem and the solution. It's those who can't see they're part of the problem that present the greatest problem. You know that I know who I am. The guys who whine about a lack of civility while being almost completely incapable of being civil are the problem. You know I'm right.

I have zero computer skills...I am a 65 year-old that remembers how thrilled I was to get one channel of HBO.
But, however, I have written a screen play on my experiences here, starring Clint Eastwood as me. Still in negotiations. Here is the poster: ![]() I hope you get the point.

I will say for me personally, it's age.
The older I get the less patience and tolerance I have for things that lack logic and I perceive to be BS. Honestly, I'm tired. Mentally and physically and drained by the daily grind. When I go off the rails, and I acknowledge I'm quicker to fly off the handle than I used to be, it's often a reflection of the kind of day or week I've had. Part of it is also the familiarity of this place. Oddly I see it as a bit of a safe space. Not many places we can just be us, whichever us we happen to be on a given day. Personally, I think it's healthy to be able to tell someone to go F themselves one day and forget about it the next day. Let's be honest, we've all had our moments where we deserved a right proper bash about the head. But we manage to still have a camaraderie and support each other. I would not still be around here after 2 decades if it was all puppies and sun shine every day. I appreciate the open honesty and being able to express ourselves warts and all. If ya think about it, it's kinda one big group therapy session.

It's really not that tough to be civil with another person. I'm not prone to get into arguments with other people simply because their viewpoint doesn't align with mine.
Instead of taking a defensive, combative position i just try and step outside of my comfort zone and try and look at their side of the issue objectively. I then step back into my comfort zone and say a silent prayer, thanking our higher power for giving me the ability of not having to go through life behaving like that simpleton, and take a moment to ponder how his dumbass even made it this far in life.
