Great Fall Weather!

We haven't had a morning below 42 here yet...highly unusual. Our average first frost is in the 3rd week of Sept and the weatherman said yesterday that we won't see any frost at least until November.

The trees are just starting to turn color.

Wow! Congrats on the great weather!

That seems weird to me because I've been seeing temps in the mid-40s near me which seems unseasonably cool to me. Granted, this is my first fall here at the new place, although this is only 60-100 miles from other places that I've lived for the past 26 years. I wouldn't think the weather here would be THAT much different from there.

I'm not actually complaining about our weather. It's been beautiful, and in the next day or two we should be back up to days of 65º/85º which, I believe, is normal.

Related to your turtles. Normally, when I go out after dark with the dog, I'll run into 5-10 frogs/toads along the side of the house. The past two nights, I haven't seen a single frog/toad, and even most of the spiders have "stayed home" due to the cold.

^^^ Here's where mine hang out during the day....or behind the fake shutters.
Just now took the pic.
Plus...the aluminum siding on the house has hundreds of those stinkbugs wherever the sun is shining.

Hmm. I farther north than you and we don't get frost this early ....usually.

stevej37 10-18-2021 08:28 AM

^^^ Grand Rapids is Oct 1...but I live inland and north of there. Normally Sept 24...I heard.
The weird thing is that we haven't even been close to 32 yet.

I've seen a few or occasionally see tree frogs. I think I've heard frogs more than I see them. Most of what I see are toads, and I think those mostly hide under rocks and things during the day. We have a lot of anoles and skinks. I've seen several (5 or 6) different kinds of snakes (mostly non-venomous). And in a short couple of week period earlier this year, I saw a bunch of chelonian reptiles that had been hit trying to cross the Interstate or highway.

I live about 75-80 miles west of Steve, and it has been fabulous weather since Thursday, after the 10 inches of rain that we had dumped on us overnight.

It's almost noon, and 69F outside. I couldn't wish for better.

Big cities are normally hotter, because of all the concrete.

stevej37 10-18-2021 09:26 AM

^^^ Huh??
75-80 miles west of me..puts you smack dab in the middle of Lake Michigan. :D

Oh...ok, I got it!

We actually got a good dose of rain last night with more on Wednesday. All my trees a changing color. Looks to be a beautiful fall the next couple of weeks.

"trees changing color"

Hahah, the "change of color" around here is usually green to brown in 24 hours.

We had a maple tree that I put in at our old home. It would be green, then we'd get a freak cold snap in Oct or Nov and in one day, I'd see the leaves go from green, maybe to yellow/orange, then brown, and on the ground, usually in 24-48 hours.

We do have one tree around here that will put on a little bit of a show. It's an invasive tree called the "Chinese Tallow" tree (sometimes called the "Popcorn tree"). It will actually do a valiant attempt at fall colors, but it's nothing like you guys see up north. Most of what we have down here is either evergreen or the leaves just turn brown and fall off.

The hard maple trees around here have great colors. About a week or two away yet.

Just a great afternoon here for this time of year.
Brought a pint glass of 2 hearted ale (with a pint refill) out on the deck next to the turtle pond. Sat back in my gravity lounge chair.
Next thing I know...it's an hour later and the beer has three honey bees floating in it. I sipped the first one in...only to realize something wasn't right.

Bees taste good!

I was up in Presque Isle (eel) the 8th 9th ad 10th. Temps were nuts! T-shirt weather the entire time. It was great weather but too warm for Salmon fishing. I'm planning a trip up to Wellston in a few weeks or whenever I get the call that my cylinder heads are done. Hopefully there will still be some Salmon in the Manistee. If not I'm sure my friend can put me on some steelhead.

BTW, I'm going to be going up to drop off my heads to Craig hopefully sometime this week. Maybe I can meet up with you and drink one of your Bells Two Hearted. :)

stevej37 10-18-2021 12:39 PM

^^^ Sound good...anytime! The beer is always cold here!
Wellston is about an hour north of me.

stevej37 10-18-2021 12:54 PM

Pic of the stink-bugs on the foundation of the garage. They were on the siding...but the temp has dropped.
Don't know where they go next...maybe into the ground?

We finally got some fall weather this weekend. Highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s.

We were wondering if spring would ever arrive. I never turned on our AC until June 3rd. I would have bet big money that I would not make it that late in the year for AC in Oklahoma City. It went from winter hanging on forever to summer. We did not get much of a spring. We deserve a nice long fall. Summer was still here last week, and upper 90s. We never did hit 100 however, so that was nice.

stevej37 10-18-2021 01:54 PM

My black walnut tree has maybe a quarter of it's nuts hanging on.
A sure sign that the weather will be turning worse soon.

pete3799 10-18-2021 02:23 PM

We've had 1 frost so far a few weeks ago. last week was unusually warm with highs in the 70's.
Leaves peaked last week but most of the trees are bald now.
Todays high was 53 low was 43

mattdavis11 10-18-2021 03:00 PM

I have heard, but have not researched, that the predictions for this winter (we almost never get one) is going to be cooler. Farmers almanac.

We only had one week of winter last year, but it was a doozie.

I need to mow again.

stevej37 10-18-2021 03:01 PM

^^^ Wow...we had 72 and sunny today. It felt like 80. (because of no wind)

mattdavis11 10-18-2021 03:09 PM

It reached 81 here today, and it felt like 72. IH10, 40 miles east of SA, TX. Keep on blowing northerners, I'll tell you when you can turn around.
