Deter mice? Car in barn.
I rented a spot in a guy’s barn. He stores people’s cars there, some Porsches, Mercedes, American iron, other stuff living under car covers.
My friend turned me on to this place, he rotates his W123 cars, keeping one in the barn while he drives the other for a few weeks. I’ll probably start doing that with my cars. There’s outlets for plugging in a battery maintainer. Should I do anything to deter mice? I assume there are mice, its just a barn with dirt floor and a couple tractors at the far end. Anything I can scatter on the ground?

Barn cats. Every farmer had them.

Moth Balls and Dryer sheets are ineffective. I like the bait idea, but you should probably clear it with the owner.
and there is this. It works well... https://www.amazon.com/Trap-Shack-Co-Red-Urine/dp/B00U0HHYCK

Is the floor it at least gravel covered? If high humidity is involved, not sure about bare dirt floors and cars and enclosed spaces.

This is a big issue for me with farm equipment - wiring is wiring, right?
Here is a good link: https://www.hagerty.com/media/maintenance-and-tech/tips-to-keep-mice-out-of-stored-cars/ For me, knowing where to put the dryer sheets has been key: Air intake, , exhaust, over the air filter, etc. There are a lot of "sonic solutions" but I have no direct experience. If you go sonic, let me know how that works! One more: https://www.wilsonauto.com/wilson-auto-blog/10-tips-to-keep-mice-out-of-your-classic-car-during-winter-storage/

I'd ask the barn owner and your buddy. "any problem with mice?" If your buddies car is there for weeks, if there was going to be a problem, he'd have probably had it. And the barn owner should know. cats, snakes, traps and poison are guaranteed, but that's probably something that the barn owner should be worrying about.

I also use the little packets. In every corner and where the jamb meets the floor by every door. My fear has always been that if something eats the dead rodent then that animal will also die.
This spring after selling my house we had to rent a storage unit in a field and wooded area. I tried a natural product instead of the typical baits. I spread this product all around the perimiter and pilled small mounds in the corners and by the doors prior to putting the stuff in the storage unit. It was some sort of pressed product that looked like the wood smoker pellets. Not sure how it has done? I guess I won't know until I empty the unit? |

There are sonic emitters. Different smelling spray types to coat wiring and hoses. Sticky traps. Poisons.
The clear-top entry boxes will get a few at a time. Roller stick over a 5 gal bucket will collect hundreds. But they will keep coming until something keeps them out.

A timely topic! 2 days ago I was checking the oil level of the 993 and found a fair sized mouse nest in behind the power steering pump. I drive this car maybe twice a month, so it wasn't just sitting for a long time. I pulled it all out and checked the tops of the cylinders, no trace i could see. So, I went to Lowes and got a few baits and a small pack of glue traps. Big mistake. I put the glue trap on the garage floor under a cabinet (I figured it was safe from friendlies, like cats and dogs). I didn't consider a small brown house wren would find it. It came flapping out with one wing and her feet in the glue - no saving the little bird

rubber snakes
I had a construction client by a wooded area. the garage slab dipped a bit, enough that the garage door seal still left a gap on the bottom corner. they were plagued by rodents. the owner put a 3-4 foot rubber snake by the door gap, maybe 12 inches from the gap and this quickly sttoped the rodents.
I don't know that size matters, but perhaps using using a snake replica of a local variety might increase the fear factor. For the two legged garage rat vermin, i have hear that a motion sensor running a sound tape of a 12 gauge shell being jacked into a gun is very effective - perhaps if a motion sensor, turned up to max, triggered a tape of a hissing snake??? good luck, chris |

Cabin Fresh. It is a mouse repellant.
They didn't have it this year at UFA so ended up with something similar but different! I use it in the travel trailer when it is stored for the winter. So far, no mice.

What about laying down some 10mil poly, driving over it and holding the edges off of the ground about 18" up, will keep ground moisture off the car underside and I don't think rodents would bother to chew through it. Don't use poison, ends up killing the animals that kill the rodents. I do like the rubber snake idea, my cats will attack anything that look like a snake, just DNA?

I have really good results with this stuff. Spray it around the perimeter and the undercarriage. Has a peppermint smell to it.
