The salesman had no commitment from you so he was free to sell it to the first person with the money. This is the first rule of sales, money talks, bs walks. Sorry, but there are millions more cars out there.

We ended up with with a better deal, better vehicle. We bought a '15 Durango RT out of our area ( below Richmond ) from CarMax with the color and options my wife wanted with 78K on the clock- one owner. So far so good. While it's not an SRT8, it is a nice 'sport' SUV. Buying out of our area we saved @$1000. The downside- we still paid a fair amount more because of the market. Upside is we received a high valuation/ trade for our Jeep.

Why? Because dealers live and die on inventory turns. Margin on a given sale is important, too, of course, and chances are the deal they made that night made more sense to them than the one you thought you had with them.

Oh, and if dealers know one thing its this: Buyers are liars. They've been down the road so many times they knew it made more sense to take the deal that was standing there that night than to wait for the "be back bus" that rarely seems to return.

I used to work in a place in a mall that sold stuff, from cheap gold baubles to $2k Lladros. Our manager used to say "the be back bus don't stop here." It was his way of saying that if you didn't make the sale when they were standing there looking and you let them leave saying that they would "be back", that was it. 99.9% of the time, he was right.

Used cars aren’t selling in days.

Many are sitting for months on the market.

So true. I made a sale tonight, where I was getting the lady more coverage for less than she was paying, could not close her. She hemmed and hawed, said she'd call me tomorrow. But when she blurted out that she had just taken a loan out against her current policy, I knew I had her. I convinced her she'd never pay it back (100% true) and the interest would compound and eat her policy up like termites. Finally closed her. But it took me an hour.

Man, I sure lucked out getting my leftover '20 Taco last October. The dealer has contacted me twice offering to buy it back and give me a killer deal on a '22.

oldest car salesman adage: buyers are liars.
a general statement - not meant to reflect upon your situation.

Bought my kid a 2019 KIA a year ago.

He's yet to put enough miles on to warrant an oil change, does not have it at school with him this year.

Been getting offers to buy it at 20% more than I paid for it.

Problem is, what do I replace it with?

You make 20% profit MINUS the cost to buy another one:
sales tax!
doc fees
title fees

Or in other words, net profit of next to nothing and now you have to find another car that isn't a lemon. Unless I really wanted out of the car I have, my time is worth more than that.
