Seeking Suggestions: Moving a Very Heavy Fountain Across Lawn

Just checking to see if I've thought of everything.

I need to move a very heave concrete fountain (470 lbs) across my lawn to its new home. I can barely budge this thing. I was thinking of getting it onto a sheet of plywood and attach ropes and drag or try to use a come-along on it on top of the plywood. Once across the lawn it has to get set onto the back patio.

I'm going to recruit a friend to help but I don't think two of us can move this and the instructions that came with it state to not lift from the upper bowls or arms - it's one piece and does not come apart.

Garage
Plywood underneath with straps or posts like Ark of the Covenant. Rent a fork truck?

instead of a sheet of plywood...get a kids plastic snow sled.
With the upturned nose...it will slide easier. They are cheap.

Man, I just don't see that rolling nicely (or at all!) across the lawn with those narrow wheels and close to 500lbs. Do you have enough plywood laying around to build a path? How far do you have to move it?

Do you have an engine hoist and a pickup?

I moved something similar on a hand truck in the same position as you have in your pic.

The 1 inch transition from patio to grass was enough to snap the column off the base.

Wife was not happy.

Get some plywood and build a little path to the destination and use a 4 wheeled dolly / platform to keep it upright the whole way.

How hard is the ground there? At 500#, I see the dolly sinking into anything but rock hard earth and not budging.

I think the plywood idea is a decent one, especially if you've got a riding mower of some sort. I would probably want a way to curve the front edge of the plywood up a bit or at least round the edges off some. I think it'd have to be minimum 1/2" but 3/4" would probably be better.

I'd be a little concerned about the rope around the arm near the top bowl. I assume it's pretty sturdy, and the rope might have some give, but I'd hate that top bowl to break off.

Cool fountain. Looks like a real PITA to move.

A bunch of PVC piping, thicker walled, used as rollers on their sides, 2 pieces of plywood as a pathway. Or get larger pipes and skip the plywood. See pic.

Keep taking the back PVC pipe and moving it to the front, over and over again. As you move onto the second plywood move the front one in front of it.

I'm guessing Fresno may not have a lot of sleds laying around stores, but maybe they do.

That's why I went with the plywood plus a way to bend up the front.

Something like this, but the front only has to bend a tiny bit, not make 3/4 of a circle

I think all it would take would be two 2x4, a sheet of plywood and some screws.

Two sheets would be enough. One, if you cut it in half and the base is less than 4'

that might work, 2 sheets or one sheet cut in half and a furniture dolly.

I used PVC pipe under our new (unfilled) hot tub that weighed about 800 lbs. Your fountain base has a higher center of gravity though. If you can get it onto a 4' sq piece of plywood - and strap it down via rope and brackets or other hardware to keep it upright - I'd say using PVC pipes should make it relatively easy to roll.

I watched our piano mover do this exact thing.

Moved an upright 40ft by himself.

YEP, that's how I moved my shed.

Put that baby on a pice of ply or a pallet and put rollers under it. Two guys can move it easily. One pushing one moving the rollers. To lift onto the porch screw 2-2x4's to the bottom of the pallet/ply so the ends of the 2x4 stick out either side like an Egyptian Sedan Chair. You get one side, friend the other lift place 2x4's on the edge of the porch. Go to back lift and push all the way onto the porch. I use this method to move outboard motors into and out of my SUV. Almost like a Gurney in and out of an Ambulance.

It's not like he's building a pyramid
That would be my suggestion as well. Put the fountain on plywood first.

The strap gimmick looks like a 3 year commitment to the chiropractor. The straps can handle the weight but can your back?
The pvc pipe trick would work or,
Hire 3 college kids with strong backs and weak minds. Money for beer and pizza will motivate them just before the weekend.
