What’s your favorite working on the car work like?
What’s your favorite working on the car work light*
I used to have a cylinder shaped CFL work light powered by 110v. It seem like it was just too big and the cord always got in the way. I’ve got a square 4“ x 6“ battery powered LED that works OK sometimes. Also, I use on Vash’s recommendation, an LED headlamp, which is nice. For working in the engine compartment or underneath, what about a magnetic base work light with a flex head to shine light as needed. It could be mounted to the bottom of the hood or maybe a fender to shine light in the right place. So, what’s your favorite work on the car light? Apparently I'm an old f**er because I use a headlamp and cheaters to see what I'm doing now. It's a pain in the ass, but I haven't found the better way yet.

I love my head band light. It is like a superpower. Everything I am looking at is brighter.

I bought some cheapo LED tube-style lights (they look like 4' flourescents) and hang them under the hood. Fantastic illumination.
Also put some el-cheapo LED adhesive strings along the runway of my lift. They do an amazing job of illuminating the underside of a car, from front to back. And if they're not enough, the 4 LED tube light is long enough to reach both runways. It's rare that I need a flashlight for working on a car these days. Sometimes though ... Not the greatest shots but they'll give you an idea. ![]() ![]()

My favorite light is the flashlight, work light or cell phone that my son is waving around about 6 inches from what I'm looking at.
I do like the led headlights and flashlights.

I love these, there is a larger one also . I also have a few harbor freight underhood led lights, that hang from the hood, and illuminate the entire engine bay . The battery life on those is sub par. The mantis lights, I posted above , are my absolute go to for the last 3 years

I have not tried one of these yet but a friend pointed me to it, it's a Dewalt DCL050, 20v as long as you already have the batteries it is pretty reasonable, the new model is 500 and 1000 lumens.

I have a makita LED battery drop light that I use a ton. And I’ve started using one of those 4’ LED lights that’s $20 from harbor freight when I’m working on cars. It has chains so I have it under the hood up out of the way, gets a ton of light right where I want it. Hell I’ll lay it under the car too if I’m working on the bottoms side.

I like natural light and work in the driveway when I can, but some things need to be done in the garage (or it’s too hot out).
Fred, I don’t see any pictures? Can you repost or post a link? |

Fifty year old drop cord with a vibration resistant 100w bulb in a steel cage with a hook to hang. "Old school" for working on the now 50 y/o Econoline (can you say breaker point ignition) and the "modern" 40 y/o 911.

Not a fan of headlight. Mainly because of sweat.
My father-in-law swears by his though. But he uses it as a hand-held light. I help him out with handy man stuff. When I get started on my work he comes running with his headlight but by then I'm almost finished with the project. A couple of weeks ago he was looking at something that needed repair, my wife grabbed the headlight and took it to him. It was pretty funny turn of the tables

I can't seem to find a decent light that can focus where I want. So I have several that I use.
Got some rechargeable cylinder types from Lowes several years ago. They do a decent job but when I need them to sit in a particular place they won't the magnets aren't strong enough. Just picked up some LED rectangular lights from Costco with a handle that has good magnets on back. Again, ok but at times can't get them aimed and they burn thru their charge pretty fast when on high. Light is very intense though. I also have plug in lights LED that are rectangular. They are great but put out some heat and are a PITA with being plugged in. I also got a LED that is similar to the old school drop light, plug in. I put some bungies underneath car hood and suspend this one. It works nicely for that purpose. At any rate, I haven't found one particular light that does it all so I resort to several and usually curse them for their deficiencies.

I am a recent convert to the headlight crew, though honorable mention for the handhelds powered by your tool battery brand of choice (dewalt for me).

What’s your favorite working on the car work like?
I had an led, battery version of this from Eastwood. It also folded in half to stick in a wheel well. Worked well for a few years but stopped taking a charge. When I took it apart to see what’s up, it crumbled into pieces. Have yet to find a replacement. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by DerkPerk; 10-28-2021 at 07:54 AM.. |
