That place looks a nice beachy sorta place to have a burger and drink or three. |
I grew up a couple of miles from where the first Whataburger outside of Texas was opened, and I loved it as a kid. The buildings used to be built as A-Frames, and you could walk up the steps to the mezzanine to eat. I stopped eating any type of fast food many, many years ago, but with the advent of Whataburger now moving into so many new markets (mine included--at least way out in the 'burbs), I may visit just to relive the childhood memories. I can still remember how those burgers, fries and shakes tasted.

8:00AM and I am jonesing for a burger. Best around these parts is Five Guys.

If you aren't using half a roll of paper towel while eating a burger, are you really eating a burger?

In-N-Out makes a fine burger, best large chain fast food burger I have had, good milk shakes, fries are weak I can think of 4 or 5 places off the top of my head here in town that are hole in the wall burger joints that have better everything than any chain May need to hit Tiny's or Hagen's for lunch. Sweet potato fries at Hagen's I could eat every day. Best ever was the Earl of Sandwich. Great burger with grilled onions,, did not need anything, mustard lettuce, perfect. Fries were good too, and the club sandwich, was excellent too.. A block or two from Memorial Auditorium, old Cambodian couple. He died, and then it was gone. My wife knows the guy runs the Whataburger in her home town. Always a fine meal, perfect fries |

That’s ridiculous. |
To further the debate, what makes a better burger. Flame broiled or flat top?
|
I prefer flame broiled but flat top, when done right is good too.

Not better, just different. YMMV. These WCs were phenomenal as were the truffle fries. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1635605870.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1635605870.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1635605870.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1635605870.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1635605870.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1635605870.jpg |
Look at Shaun hawking his DIY burgers on a Whataburger thread :)
Easy bud. Back to WB, it’s my favorite fast food chain. By a long shot. Even their special ketchup is good. I do a regular burger with jalapeños. Back in the day, I had cheese. Now I even skip the fries. Mentioned above, Shake Shake. Easily the most expensive fast food burger I have ever bought. And it’s relatively tiny. Really good for sure, but damn. The are really proud of that thing. |
I never tried Whataburger..Have done Shake Shack, In&Out Smashburger,5 guys.. Umami burger...
Here on LI we have a great place All American |

Smashburger is great, same as Shake Shack but you have to order a double at SS to make it worthwhile. |
Last year, I had a Classic Burger at Cheeburger Cheeburger.
I think it was about $12 for just the burger. It was drowning in cheese. One bite and I knew I should have ordered it with none. Just don't like the huge amounts of cheese anymore. |
I think that when we mix comparisons of fast food with other choices (homemade or some of the frou-frou and elaborate/expensive burgers) we risk confusing the issue. For me, they are entirely different things. I can order my $2 chain broiled whopper minus mayo from the local Burger King from my phone ap and and be eating it $2 and 2 minutes later. I cannot even make it at home for that price...or that fast. If I am really hungry, I can add an order of 8 ghost pepper chicken nuggets for another $1.49. I can do the same almost anywhere in the country and it is uniformly the same. I do not compare that with gong to a restaurant and spending $20 and a hour. My time is valuable as well...and If I am making $80hr, the fancy sit down burger cost me almost $100 more than the Whopper. So, it depends on situation for me.
I have had good food at a 5 Guys, but the one closest to me is not very good...and they are expensive compared to McD or BK. I try to mix it up with some chicken sandwiches from Popeyes or Chikfil A when I am in the city about 30 minutes away (non locally) and when I travel, places I can't eat at home like Bob's Burgers, Rex's and Lotaburger in NM , Krystals, in the SE, White Castle in the NE, In N Out, FatBurger, or even Wienerschnitzel for hot dogs and chili cheese fries (don't have them here) out west. Lots of small, local places make great burgers. Red Robin makes a pretty good burger for a sit down chain. Places like Smashburger are good as well, but not as common. Juts need more time and more money. |

My most recent burger purchase was Smashburger. It didn't make me ill but I won't be going back. There's a Whataburger about 20 miles from home so it'll need to wait until I'm in that area.
|
We have two in town. One is a Whataburger, the other a Whataripoff. Seriously, there are differences from location to location, and I've been around them my entire life, in many places, in Texas.
|
When I worked in Texas I would stop at a Whataburger on I-10 Between the La. state line and Houston. That place was as clean as it could be and someone was walking around asking if you needed any more ketchup, mustard or anything else. Family owned and always a nice place to visit.
