My wife has family in Bennet. Next time we are out there we will give it a try!

My fav burger hole in wall in San Antonio is Chris Madrid's, which has a slight Tex Mex twist on the burgers. I ran into Meg Ryan there back when she was married to Dennis Quaid and living near SA. Back then it was just a shack with about 15 seats.

They serve a bean burger, which is actually refried beans with the burger. Or the Flamin' Jalapeno aka, the Flamin' A S S burger.

Also served is pico de gallo for putting on your burger. It makes the burger!

Haven't been there but used to frequent Good Stuff Eatery near Reagan Airport in Virginia. It filled a void.

Solid choice there. I always stay in that neighborhood when I have to go to DOE HQ. DCA feels like cheating compared to Dulles and on a nice day I can walk to Forrestall (across the street from the Smithsonian Castle).

Crystal City Sports Pub is a little (ok a lot) less polished but has killer daily deals. On 23rd St but across the highway from the hotels and the restaurant strip.

Darn you all... now I need to make burgers for dinner - cast iron "beef chuck/lamb sirloin blend smashburgers" for this kitchen.

BBQ ... Can't say I really have a place in SA that I frequent other than Rudy's, which is a chain but good. Brisket has gotten upwards of $12 per half pound there now. Rudy's was started by the same guy that founded Fudruckers, Macaroni Grill, and a bunch of others.

For BBQ I always make a short trip to Lockhart near COTA. BBQ capital of Texas. Give Kruez Market a try, one of the best!

In SA go to El Milagtrito on N St Mary's, which is pretty close to Ft Sam. They still do whole head barbacoa and it is amazing. Only open until 3 pm.

Awesome tip. I will check it out when we get back.

The only time I remember eating out in Austin was at a Dairy Queen right outside Bergstrom Air Force Base (now closed) and once at Jack in the Box (It was horrible...never again). I did eat in the chow hall a lot when in San Antonio in Basic Training and then Officer's Training (now at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery AL)...but never downtown. Travelled to SA once later for work and went down to the River Walk...and that had some fairly nice restaurants there (but that was still many years ago).

Most of the restaurants I’ve seen along the River Walk seem very tourist trappy.

My wife retired from the Forrestal Bldg. She worked for NNSA when we were in Abq. I worked nearby the Forrestal (walking distance) and went over there for the Dunkin Donuts in the basement to get a dozen now and then. There is a Hill Country Barbeque up the street on 7th that is pretty good (brisket), but a little pricey like all DC. https://www.hillcountry.com/location/hill-country-washington-dc/
I don't know if the current situation has impacted them/their service

Yes...making me hungry for a burger.

How did this thread change into a Texas thread??
Is that where upscott is from?

Jolly Amaranto 11-03-2021 12:29 PM

Been years since I have eaten anywhere along the River Walk in San Antonio. Usually find something up in the vicinity of the redeveloped Pearl Brewery area. Favorite BBQ is way up on Blanco just north of Wurzbach.

That was our experience when we were down there a few years ago. If we are in that part of Texas we will usually hit Salt Lick in Driftwood.

A while back, there was a thread about In-N-Out Burger, wherein some of us pontificated that Whataburger was better than In-N-Out Burger. upscott mentioned in that thread that he would be traveling to Texas in a few weeks and would eat a Whataburger to make a comparison. He did and reported the results in this thread.

That’s the long and short of it.

Of course, every one of these threads degenerates into “who’s got the best burger” and then that morphs into something entirely different, and here we are.
