Oy, I have too many wasted weeks in a dingy suite deep in the bowels (but, hey, Dunkin!) of that place. Depending on your background, you might have even been to old GM-0xx. They did have a fridge full of beer however... So did the NNSA director BTW.

There's a 5-guys at L'Enfant Plaza mall now, if you're into that. They really shined up the place - it was so grim ten years ago, like a fever dream from the 1970s.

Don't miss it, though I could almost go for a "half-smoke roulette" at the street cart under the DOE arch. 99% of the time you're OK, 1% you're afraid that you're _not_ gonna die!

Is that where upscott is from?

Javadog recommended Whataburger in another thread. I, being from NorCal and not being a frequent traveler, had never had Whataburger. I thought I’d report back that it was indeed very good. I also mentioned that I had it in San Antonio while visiting my son who lives there.

I've never had a Whataburger, In & Out, Culvers, etc. They just aren't around here and I don't get out much ...

For a burger ... local joints beat all the fast food places here, but Cook-Out is probably the best local "fast food chain" and Steak 'n Shake is good too....

All of them have suffered in consistency and quality recently .... even the local joints.

OK all you SW'ers. Where are some good places to eat at Holloman AFB? Chain or otherwise. The daughter is heading there Monday.

Ouch, that is sort of out there. I lived in El Paso for a bit, stationed at 1st Armored Division.

Holloman is really in the desert. Easy trip up the mountain to Cloud Croft, NM, which sits at over 9,000 feet. We left El Paso at over 100 degrees and it was in the 70s when we arrived up in Cloud Croft.

Also, very close to White Sands Natl Monument.

Hatch chilis are the thing around that area. Grown in Hatch, NM. Used for everything, on burgers, enchiladas, eggs, pozole, you name it.

Cattleman's is a famous joint outside of El Paso, so probably an hour from Holloman

Head north east up US70 to Alamogordo where all the usual chains (suspects) have set up shop.

I should specify that in AmeriCorps she is limited how far she can travel.

Fortunately for her, she is willing to try about anything short of balut. She has natto on the list of things to try if that give you an idea what she is willing to eat.

Well, since you brought up balut, I don’t think anyone here ought to go look up what natto might be.

Yuck.

I am just saying she has a limit. Not much of one, but she does eventually draw the line.

Natto or the Eraserhead baby. Take your pick.

Natto is delicious. sure it is like snot in consistency. But a pinch of natto with a pinch of rice. yum. breakfast!! I ate it 7 days straight at our Tokyo hotel breakfast bar. that first bite was a bit of a leap tho.
