The song by Deep Purple, the title track of the album by the same name. 1974. Probably the hardest song I ever played as a kid, on the drums. It would flat wear your ass out and it was about three minutes longer than you wanted it to be. Any of you guys that ever tried it know what I’m talking about.

So, a lot of people have covered it and now that we have YouTube, scads of people are playing their version of it on YouTube. One of my favorites is by a 12-year-old Japanese kid, who I think has a really bright future. She doesn’t play the song in the same way that Ian Paice did originally, but it doesn’t bother me and it doesn’t bother Ian, either. He has seen the kid’s video and loves it.

Here she is recording it with a band in Japan, I don’t know if they do more than this one song or if they just got together for this one recording, I need to check that out. They do a hell of a good job playing it, I particularly like the guitarist. His tone was really good and reminded me a lot of the original. Of course, the kid on the drums is the star.

Ha! The kid's sticks are almost as big as his arms! Very talented indeed, smooth with his motions, nothing rushed. The whole band is fun to watch too. Thanks for posting, javadog! ...

Really good job by the kid, but was also impressed with how much the lead sounded like Ian Gillan....LOVE Deep Purple !

The lead singer was great but the backup singer hurt the vocals in a spot or two. Ironically the original recording of this was sung by David Coverdale. When Gillan returned to the band after Coverdale departed, he wouldn’t sing that song. I think Gillan was the better singer and he will always be my favorite in that band but Coverdale did a pretty damn good job. Hughes, the bassist that replaced Glover, also could sing.

I checked and that same group did several cover songs on the occasion of her 12th birthday. Fantastic stuff.

I think the song was about 6:41 too long. The kid did good but being small as he appears to be and holding the sticks on the very ends gave him allot of leverage.

Not a fan of the song, huh? I think it’s great, it’s a very complicated song and Deep Purple was my favorite band in that era. The greatest hard rock band of the 1970s…

Yoyoka is a chick…. Kaneai Yoyoka…

Supposedly she plays guitar and keyboards, too.

Glenn Hughes is a monster vocalist who also happens to play bass.

The combo of him and Coverdale in that line up was awesome.

Personally Gillan never did it for me.

He's a bit like Plant or Roth, considered great vocalists but where they really that or just really good frontmen?

Roth I think was after his time.

Great crooner and if born a few decades earlier would definitely fit in with The Rat Pack in every way.

Roth did have a pretty good showbiz vibe. Some of his solo work was pretty interesting.

On Burn, they used Hughes for some of the vocals, I think he could hit much higher notes than Coverdale.

This one isn’t quite as good. The guitar tone is a little off and the vocals show the limitations of a Japanese accent, as compared to the original. Still, the little drummer absolutely nails it. She’s incredible, for having just turned 12.

I am a bass player, which means I care about drums and drummers. I have a strong preference for drummers with very good "meter." Also, in playing cover songs I really do not want my fellow musicians to play them "in their own style." This usually means they never did the hard work of learning the song according to the original artist. With that introduction, you HAVE to watch this. I find it stunning:

She was about eight when she recorded that, which is pretty incredible. When Ian Paice saw a video of her playing Burn, he commented that she now hits harder than he does. She has commented before that people say she has a style similar to John Bonham. It will be interesting to see how she develops in the next 10 years.

It’s fun to watch how excited she gets when she’s playing 16th or 32nd notes on the bass drum.

Supposedly she’s being taught keyboard and guitar, also. I haven’t seen her play either of those instruments, that might be interesting.

I’ve been watching her for years. There are quite a few young drummers coming up through the ranks. Sina is another one that has gotten a lot of attention on YouTube, she’s a little bit older. Here is her version of Burn:

I’ve also had my eye on a young French guitarist that only has a few years under her belt and already is pretty incredible and has her own band.

I'm not going to beat this dead horse again but nobody commented on the video I posted. I don't care about acknowledgement of my post, but I just encourage folks to have a look at that video. Someone mentioned rolling the kick drum, and this is what she is doing starting around 2:15. She looks to be about five years old in that performance. And if any of you are actually familiar with Mr. Bonham's actual lines for that song, you'll notice she is playing it note for note. And so, to me, the video illustrates both the skill of a young prodigy and the genius of rock history's finest drummer. Double-awe for me.

My nephew started young also and never understood why people have a double kick.

Even if you have just one bass drum, running double pedals is infinitely preferable to one, I used to get pretty bad shin pain from playing too many notes on the base. Eff that…

Few of the adult professional drummers I have worked with had her skill. If nothing else, we expect drummers to be the Seargent At Arms in terms of the beat. The meter. For a good musician, a drummer who is dead-accurate creates a sonic challenge. "Lets try to hit these notes at the SAME TIME." There are drummers who show us that we can't really even tap our feet accurately. At five years old, she was one of those drummers. I don't care if a drummer gets fancy with lots of fills, in fact the better ones don't do that. Heck....the skill of a drummer often seems inversely proportional to the number of pieces in their kit. We just want them to keep the beat. I have played with drummers like that, but they are the exception and not the rule.

I'm going to audition for another project two Sundays from now. Based on the videos, their drummer is decent but heavy-handed. I'm also not crazy about loud drummers. They are the reason we invented plexiglass. I digress.
