We had our third black powder match of the year
Yesterday, 11/7 Sunday, since we had to cease our matches due to COVID-19 last year. I tried to stay in shooting shape with my air rifle. In the August match I tied for first, in September I stopped halfway through as my cancer infusion made me pretty sick. Yesterday I felt pretty good and ended up in first place! Two guys tied for second and the guy that won the shoot-off was a real expert as he had been shooting BPCR for years but the range he went to closed down. Here is the 1st place medal I got with one of the rifles I made about 2 years ago, #11 percussion cap, 50 caliber, 80 grains of Goex FFG black powder and 0.490 patched round ball.

Fantastic, congratulations! Most importantly, I'm glad that you were feeling good enough to finish (vs Sep).

Well done! How about a pic of the winning black powder gun? I've never really gotten into black powder but my brother and two of my close friends have them and seem to really enjoy shooting them.

Congrat's.
I should start shooting in the black powder competition at our local pistol club. Even my friend Bruce got a third place in the championships. Mind you, there are only three people who shoot black powder at the club LOL |

Here it is, sort of a Schuetzen type of rifle and since most of us that shoot those matches are "old" we can sit down or use a palm rest (I use one) and I had to cut 8 inches off the barrel as it was way to heavy for me to shoot off hand! Bought a 11 degree crown cutter and that made the barrel muzzle very nice. I forget where I got the barrel but it was in the white so I had to do the machine work for the breech plug, cut the dovetails for sights and under barrel lug. I have a Harbor Freight 3 in 1 lathe/mill/drill press that was made in 1998. Paid $250 for it, 60 or so mill cutters ($$$$), drills and a super heavy duty moveable bench from the estate of one of the gun club members who had died. He cut hardwood so I took the bearing apart, cleaned them and greased and the lathe has no measurable runout at all!
If anyone wants to come do one of out matches I.E. 1st Sunday is rifles, 2nd Sunday is pistolas, black powder or a substitute, please let me know, starts about 9AM to 12 noon or so, don't have to be a member of our club. If anyone just wants to try black powder, most week days I am free except for a doctor visit or get a dose of immunotherapy. John ![]() |

That's a beautiful gun! Love the octagon barrel. The entire look of it brings me back to an older guy that lived in a house in the alley behind the house I grew up in. He had several octagon barrel BP guns. As a kid I used to love to go over to his house and look a his gun collection after "helping" him work on his old Farmall tractors.
