A tragic story about alcohol, fast cars and stupidity

My word this is just jaw dropping stupid. The loss of life is ...well I don't know the way to describe her death.

One of many reasons why I DETEST professional sports. I think it brings out the worst in many people. Not all, I know, but a great many nonetheless.
And while I'm ranting, I think the NFL should look into the Raiders' culture and why it seems to attract so many miscreants - both with their players and with their fans.

Give somebody too young to handle it a potload of money...probably more of a factor than the NFL.

Alcohol isn't a requisite at these speeds.

How can this be? Acording to Stijn, only Mustangs crash.
Never a Porsche...

My thoughts are that he had too much money too young, never suffered serious consequences for his actions in the past,, lacked both common sense and driving skills and had no respect for alcohol.
Factor in his age and Young Man's Immortality Syndrome and the table was set.

Too many of these tragedies over the years with athletes in all sports and, unfortunately, this likely will not be the last.

Lots of lives irrevocably damaged.

I was a resident advisor, basically in charge of rule enforcement, on a dorm floor at Washington State University in the early 80's. Our dorm had several football players living in it. Covering up and protecting players from suffering the consequences of actions, from assault, dui, to rape, was a large part of the coaches job. I've viewed college and professional sports, especially football, differently ever since. Combine stupidity with lots of money, and years of getting a pass, and you get this type of outcome.

This guy was from my era and sort of the poster child for football player behavior that got a pass from everyone. If you read a retrospective about him from his coaches at the time it is full of "great guy from a troubled background" BS. He was a menace.

Covering for talented football players he been endemic for many decades.

When the likes of Thurman Thomas can graduate with the degree from college, and then later admit he is functionally illiterate, football has jumped the shark. The ONLY purpose of any and all colleges and universities is to educate students. Everything else is secondary. Yet football, and basketball, and all the other tops "sports" as so important for the money a university can make, everyone just give the players a pass. That needs to change. It will change right after congress all start to work for the good of the country, and not pet projects in their district, and making the other party look bad, and just before full peace in the middle east.

Another issue for these guys is the baby mama drama and how it seems appropriate conduct or a badge of honor.

Travis Henry a former University of Tennessee running back, whom I don't believe graduated, has 11 kids with 10 women. I read an article at one point where a judge/court had to manage the payment of his child support through garnishment from the NFL salary. There was one point where he was $170k behind in payment.

He has since been to Fed prison for drug trafficking.

Perfect: the truth is hard.

This may not land well, but I got my driver license in November, 1972.

Driving drunk was just done, all the time...I did. I drove high on pot as well. I also drove too fast and reckless.

I was incredibly lucky, indelibly so.

This has nothing to do with the NFL or the thug life...this young man just had a faster car than most.

I don't know how to prevent it, no ones does. I grew out of it, most do, a lot do not.

Another family in mourning...thank god I wasn't the cause. I could not live with myself.

"A tragic story about alcohol, fast cars and stupidity"

Don't forget trim. I sorta wonder if he would have been going 156 if there wasn't someone pretty in the seat next to him....

Nevertheless, this was going to happen one day, it just happened to be that day. Remember the first time you realized that anyone with a credit card could buy a motorcycle that went 190 mph? This is that.

Fair point. I did a fair amount of the same in high school. It was in a 63 40hp Bug though so my top speed was a fair bit less. I would say there is a lot more awareness today of how dangerous this is vs when we were coming up. I remember cops breaking up parties I was at telling everyone they had 60 seconds to get in our cars and head home before we got arrested.
