Paint to sample

My wife has just bought a Cayman which I think a previous owner must have taken part in the "paint to sample" option that Porsche offers. I know almost nothing about this PTS option.

Anyone have an knowledge of how one goes about getting something like this done? Is it offered at all Porsche dealers?

This reason I ask is because this car has been repainted a diff color than what it was as new. The last owner knew nothing about this at all, but I sure would like to know more about it. I brought some of this up a while back under heading "It aint easy being green"

BTW the paint on this car is flawless, in fact she bought it BECAUSE of the color and how
good it looked on this car.

Its just an option you can add when ordering. Check the box and add $10k to the invoice along with some extra build extra time.

Its done at the factory, not a dealer option.

It was common. My 08 was built there. Pretty sure the 718s are built in Germany.

This is the only paint to sample car I've had experience with

George Harrison's McLaren F1 in the most beautiful colour I've seen on any car

This is what was used as a sample for the colour match

True story, as I asked the production manager myself why he was walking around the office holding a large vegetable

Wow, really beautiful. I can understand buying that for the color!

Do you have a certificate of authenticity? Maybe get one and you can get more info.

Agree, think it would be a great colour for a 964 too

There was a PTS 82 Targa for sale last year that I was lusting after. The seller had the original order which asked for a particular MB color.

Very tasteful.

As I understand it, you can send a sample of something you want matched or a code for another color not offered by Porsche. ie PPG UC141741F (happens to be the window frame color on my current project).

Could have just gone with Aubergine.

I always wondered how you touchup or repair a PTS car. Paint code is usually 999 or 9999. Do you have to get in touch with PCNA to find out the specific color and mix?

I needed to touch up a spot on the lower right corner, looked like somebody scuffed a curb maybe, so this shop in town here used their special camera for such things and in 10 minutes I had a exact match spray bomb for $34. Taped it
off and the match was perfect. All done in half hour. I like this color because it has no sparkle to it. No metallic I guess, more like old fashion paint from way back.

As far as I know the modern PTS option still has names and paint codes.

Point is a dealer should be able to get you the info using the VIN or the build sticker that is usually under the hood (or elsewhere depending on year/model) if it's still there.

I read one story about George Harrison showing up to an event driving a VW Bug back when they were common, because he hated attracting attention to himself when he 'needed to be there'.

Aaaaaand, apparently he also liked being noticed!

As others have pointed out, PTS is an option you ordered and the car was painted at the factory. Your order has to fall within the window of when Porsche is doing a run for PTS cars. You pick from a list of approved colors by model. Porsche does still have a true ‘to sample’ option but you have to pay them to do a feasibility study and you may or may not get approval. I have no idea how you get on that list, assume you have to be a heavy hitter.

Looks like a great color on your Cayman. It’s hard to tell in that photo you provided but reminds me of Murano green.
