PayPal Help Needed

My sister needs money. PayPal wants to charge me a 2.9% fee, despite my sister being friend/family. PayPal says there is no fee when I pay with "bank or paypal account." Paypal knows my debit card, but will not transfer money from my debit card to my PayPal account.

PayPal wants my "bank" information, and prefers that I disclose my online banking password! PayPal is simply NOT going to get my password. Another option exists where I give PayPal my routing number and account number. This is all that PayPal should need. I gave this info to PayPal. PayPal says they made two small deposits to my bank account and then withdrew them in a single withdrawl. They want me to confirm this is my account by telling them the amounts of the deposits. But.....

Those deposits never happened. It seems as if PayPal is INSISTING, and lying, in order to get my online banking password.

I think I used to be able to transfer money to my PayPal account using my debit card. Has this changed? Advice?

We use Venmo for stuff like this. Much easier. You need a profile and the person sending money to needs a profile.

What you describe doesn't sound like it originates from PayPal.

I now notice that the option of giving my routing number and account number (instead of giving my online banking password) "takes 2-3 business days" according to PayPal. It goes through a third party vendor. PayPal is really starting to irritate me.

I am pretty sure this is the official PayPal site, using an account I have had with them for some time. The account and password I am using for PayPal is the same as I have used successfully for years. I suppose it is conceivable that a hacker got that information and created a scam site, but I doubt this is happening.

PayPal says they cannot transfer money from a card (they have my debit card info) to my PayPal account balance. It must be from "bank," not "card." Can anyone confirm this is PayPal's policy?

You don't need PayPal.

Why not transfer the money from your bank account to your sisters bank account?

"PayPal is really starting to irritate me."

Bail now!

And as JW says, There are PP scams out there. When you have completely bailed on PayPal you can ignore all of the PayPal spam scams too.

Plus PayPal is a horrible service IMO

I used paypal for years on ebay purchases.
One day, my password wouldn't work. They sent me 4 of 5 security questions to answer.
All of them failed. Wtf???..I think I know what city I was born in, or my dogs name.

I quit trying at that point...I will never use them again.

I like PayPal and have never had problems with it. That said, it sorta seems like you are already being scammed. I have never had anything like what you describe happen to me. Are you sure you are talking to PayPal?

I used PayPal Gift all the time. But you have to use a routing and acct # from your bank to avoid paying fees. That's just how it is. I use Zelle too and it's fine.

Do this. You know she is a real person, just do a bank transfer. Account to account. The bank will charge a flat cost, not a percentage.

Depending on your or her bank you can set her account up in yours as a transfer account.

Funds overnight and no fee.

I have accounts with multiple different banks and they all talk to each other.

For example I can withdraw money from my Citi account from my Wells account, or transfer money between the banks as if they were just different types accounts, savings/checking, within the same bank.

Also check your bank for Zeille, very common to be an option for sending payments.

Or Venmo

The whole world should have our electronic xfer system. I can email or text anyone that banks electronically and transfer money instantaneously with no charges and no risks. Pretty nice system, I have often wished it extended to be useable in the USA.

There's also western union...if they still send money. Paypal is NOT a bank, doesn't offer the same security.. Call me an old curmudgeon, but I won't/don't use paypal.

If time isn't critical, send a check snail mail?

Supe, use venmo.

Paypal may put a hold on funds randomly, they did it to me when I had 'increased activity'.
