Tryon Palace, New Bern, NC First Palatine German and Swiss settlement in 1710 in what became NC. Nice town very near the coast. |

...scariest part of the drive down to the Outter Banks.
Prepard to dive !! Descending down to the bottom of the Cheasapeak Bay. (Notice water on three sides of the bridge roadway) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1670356922.jpg |

Sure thing - here's a condensed version from youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIcb0qoDWm8 I think i get freaked out easier than most, having been brought up commuting throught the Lincoln and Holland tunnels. But at least there, you don't get the sensation of actually descending into the Hudson River. We did one crossing on the bridge-tunnel a week before a major storm was forecast. The waves were almost up to the roadway, winds were over 50 mph and the bridge was literally littered with all sorts of dead seabirds. Also had ringside seats to a Coast Guard rescue of a sinking charter boat in 10-12 ft seas. |
My wife and I were crossing the Chesapeak in the late 80"s on a motorcycle trip and all of a sudden cars were pulling over...there was a submarine heading out to sea, rare sight!

My first trip through the Holland Tunnel - maybe 7 or 8 years ago - my first time getting freakish photos while using the then new "Panorama" mode on my iPhone, and my first time driving in Manhattan. Born and raised in LA, I'm pretty used to gnarly driving/traffic, but the only thing I knew about the Holland Tunnel was from an episode of I Love Lucy lol. And while no one made a U-turn down their while I was under the river, I still thought it a rather great piece of engineering infrastructure.

I would have loved one of those instead of walking through the Lincoln Tunnel after a Roger Waters concert in the Meadowlands, in high school. "Of course there will be cabs there to take us back to the city after the concert," we said. |
