Don't mean to throw this topic too of course, but I will add this alternative. My Father had donated his body to the local medical school for Anatomy instruction. They picked his body up from the house, after all the proper issues were resolved. They returned the ashes to us about 5 months later. There was a very nice program put on by the school for all the family members of people who had donated that semester. A very odd aside. One of my sons good friends was a student that semester. He said he saw Mr. Smith at his class that semester. Really spooked Justin, now M.D.

Thank you for this post and for your father's generosity and good will. Interesting option and worthy of mention!

My instructions to my wife is to toss my ashes off the end of my dock the same as my father before me. (We both have our own docks)
When I mentioned this to our lawyer while getting our will done he said that would be illegal, so just do it without putting it in the will.

Funny, this is the one that comes to mind for me (words by Lee Hays, sung by Pete Seeger)
If I should die before I wake
All my bone and sinew take

I knew a couple of old timers who were big time hunters who had a bit of their ashes put in shotgun and rifle shells. Every year at deer camp or in the family duck blind they'd get touched off across the marsh or in the field. Thought that was kinda cool. Still along for the hunt til the box of ammo was gone.-WW

It's on my list to do next year: POA, living will, DNR and burial wishes. I am raised Greek Orthodox and cremation is not an option. I don't practice the religion anymore but sometimes it's hard to let go of customs and traditions.

I prefer to keep it short and sweet - gravesite service and a Shiva for one day for friends and family. Rather than a period of mourning, my thought is to celebrate a life with food, music, art and cars (my passions).

Well, I will be cremated, the plan is to have some of my ashes added to the paint on my 78 911SC , then some of my ashes spread at some of my favorite tracks/races, both BMX and car, of course some off the deck at my club. The rest, will be mixed with ashes of my fur babies and spread over the waters off Bimini.
