Escape from a House of Horror

I don't like to promote and don't watch 20/20 as many of their stories are bias in nature, but, I stumbled acorss this multi part series this morning. So far it is up to five epsidoes. I assume the next will be out this week?

You may recall this story from a few years ago? What these children endured from their parents is sad and horiffic. The strength the one girl finally mustered to save her self and twelve sibilings the oldest who was 29 is just amazing.

Her inspiration to get out and look for help to me, came from the most unlikely of sources.

I will post the first video if interested the other four are on Youtube.

I have been watching , to me I am amazed how bright and cheerful the two daughters are . They had such a horrific childhood it would be VERY easy for them to be bitter and hateful . After they were removed from the home they have been let down by social services which is very disturbing to me . All the children removed from that he$$hole should have been handled with much care .

I generally am not a hateful person as it is just wasted negative energy . But in this case I would personally put a bullet in the parents heads if given the opportunity . I am totally serious , there is NO EXCUSE for ever treating any child like that . None ! And especially your own children. And these parents considered themselves to be religious !!!

I hope all of those children/young adults get the help and support they need so they can possibly lead a normal life .

What P-ssed me off the most is how the state of Cali failed these children. Their case manager was running her Real estate business instead of working to help these kids. Most have no home or place to stay even though there is a trust fund to help them.
I havent seen all the episodes so I hope things have gotten better for them.

I agree they need to die, but only after 20 years of being chained to their beds, and kept in a cell and on minimum food and water rations. Just whet they did to their kids. NO TV, internet or visitors. Kept in place so long their muscles atrophy and they have trouble standing. Unfortunately that treatment is way less than the law allows.

This is a horrible case. How does this happen in a neighborhood with other people living nearby? State children's services are typically a horror show. My daughter was a case manager for children's services in WA for 18 months after graduate school through a program that helped her complete her social work degree. She couldn't get out of there fast enough. Understaffed and underfunded. Career idiots in senior positions waiting to retire. Constant turnover because they can't keep the smart and hard working younger staff. She hated to leave her case load but could not stay.

Long ago when I was young and dating, I dated a chick that was in college working towards a degree so she could get a job at the State level in children's services. She had wanted to do it all he life. She graduated, and finally quit in disgust after just 18 months. All the bosses were there to do as little as possible to draw a fat paycheck. They openly had zero compassion for the kids, and had hearts of stone. All that mattered to them was a 9 to 5 job with a long lunch break and lots of state benefits and retirement as soon as possible. The kids were just not even a concern. It just crushed the chick I was dating, but she could not work 18 hours days and get overruled at every turn.

I suggest she write a story and send it to the local TV stations and the newspaper. We broke up not long after so I don't know what she did.

I watched a few mins of the above video. Wow!

Some folks are just twisted and evil.

Fortunately, people are extraordinarily resilient mentally and physically. Still, the family is going to have baggage and issues the rest of their life, probably some worse than others depending upon their personality and psychological make up. You can have 2 kids come from an abusive home, one can have issues, but be productive and functional, while the other is a mess. I think that usually comes down to genes.

same as the OP...quit watching 20-20 and similar shows because of their obviously slanted viewpoint. But this got me hooked. Watched all the episodes.

The world of today needs more nosey neighbors...

That show was pretty heart breaking, so bad I started to just notice back ground stuff. Stopped paying attention to the faces and just heard what was going on. Kinda a defence mechanism I guess?

I started to notice how they have a accent. Not a cultural accent but one of never hearing how regular people talk. You would think she had some sort of actual, physical speech impediment until you thought about it. She never got to hear people talk outside of the house. The one girl mixed up wording (at least to us) a lot and only said "siblings" refering to her brothers and sisters. She never refered to them by name. She also only said, "Mother" and "Father" in reference to her parents, and said it in a really creepy unnatural way. You could tell she was only allowed to say exactly those words her whole life. Never more or less.

The nightmare was endless...Justin Bieber for heaven sake, pretty much kept that girl from going pure feral. Bascially to me only online, social media raised and developed those kids.

I pity whoever buys that house, I hope they dozed it. It's got to be so evil feeling just walking through the door you'd run off gibbering.

On even a sadder note imagine what happens in third world countries...puke.-WW

ps. On a side note about that accent, I'd heard it before on that Alaskan Bush People show. I guess when you isolate a family they develope their own language and speech inflections. Yes thats a real thing "speech inflections"

The footage from her 911 call and talking to the cop who first encountered her really shows the speaking issues. The girl even realizes it herself. It's wild.

At a guess, no child there was ever allowed to speak? Maybe if spoken to but only short and to the point? The rest of the time it had to be silence, or you'd get chained up same as if you'd snuck some food. So proly same as deafness, you don't learn any voice inflection so you accent, strange to us, parts of words. Seems like they mention they taught themselves to speak. And I think it was said this went on for 30 years? Simply horrifying. -WW

I watched the first couple episodes, and it seemed as though they were both childlike in their speech and mannerisms.

Jordan, the 17-year-old, who ran away from home… I was surprised how well spoken she was, after leaving such a cloistered and deprived life.

Such a sad situation and I hope the parents are put away for a long time.

Perhaps I should have explained more about my post saying we need more nosey neighbors.

My childhood was spent on a block of working class houses. The majority of kids on the block were baby boomers. Long before the internet, only a few had TV.

This would have NEVER happened in that neighborhood. Every so often, the moms would get together to play cards, drink coffee and chat. We kids hated these gatherings bacause if you'd done something wrong that your mom didn't know about she'd know then.

Societal change....not all of it has been good. Such a house would have been very noticed back then.

Over here in Baker in the 80's...I sternly heard, "Oh little Stanly, does your Mom know your in here buying condoms"? Another tragic life lesson..."If you don't tell your parents I caught you skipping school and drinking my Gold Slogger, I will tell them at church this Sunday. Everyone knew everything especially who's kid was who's. And I lived on a ranch, miles from town and only went there for school, church, and odd jobs. Nobody should have known me from Adam.

Pretty sure this nightmare story started 20 to 30 years ago. So figure they got married in the late 90's and started having kids. I wonder what twisted them? And it was both of them. You'd think one of the parents would have been sane. No relatives? They just need simply put down and buried. Same as a rabid dog. No fuss no muss. Theres just no understanding this one.-WW

I've been near Baker back in the 70's. Elk hunting trips with buddies. Beautiful country.

Anway, think you nailed it on the accents...developed with only themselves to talk with...and then very limited.

Not sure how much you watched but they were raised in the same WV town, religious families. It has been revealed the father seems to have a temper, also something going on with the mother that hasn't been disclosed yet, I would assume some sort of inhernet mental condition based on what was said, the series isn't over and they stated "more on that later".

They began distancing themselves from family and friends after having the first child, further and further as more children were born. The discipline is a twisted belief in the bible as is the excessive amount of children.

My friends and I would walk to school starting in first grade. We didn't have school buses. My parents divorced when I was two. I was raised by my mother as my father said in California when we moved back to NJ. Becasue my mother worked after school I would often walk to her work rather then go home. Our town had a main street (Pacific Ave) like most small towns. I would stop in various stores on my way to see my mother. Stop in on store after another Jackson's Drug store buy a pice of candy or two, The card shop and look at art suppplies, the hobby shop with the mean old guy and at the models, Allen's mens store and look at the Cub and Boy Scout stuff and Pinewood Derby cars.

Unbeknownst to me after I left a store they would call to my mothers work and let her know I just left. When I arrived at my mothers work she would say what were you doing here, what were you doing there? I was scared to death to be out of line because she somehow knew where I was and what I was doing all of the time.

It was great.
