They kept my old set of tires as "cores" there were good enough to recap. The 1960 had a pretty small tire, and after nearly 50 years I don't remember the exact tire size. This would have been in late 1971 or early 1972. 30 bucks then is $200 now.

stevej37 12-06-2021 02:58 PM

^^^ would you drive on a recap now?
Tire quality is X10 what it was then.

When I was a teen...you couldn't drive 20 miles without passing someone on the side of the road changing a flat.

Quiet. (so far- about 50 miles) At 40k? who knows.
I've got some balancing issues, so I need to sort that out.
Potential problem is they catch a bunch of gravel. A bunch. I can't tell if trapped gravel is causing balance issues. I hope not. They look like mini ag tires for a car. I will get back when issues sorted out.

I just bought 4 of those for a customer . I was surprised how nice they rode . I am curious to see how well they wear

stevej37 12-06-2021 03:48 PM

All fine and dandy...until you see the price.

Has anybody ever been on I 80 up near the Delaware water gap ? I have never seen so many tire carcasses on the side of the road in my life . I have been through there twice and both times the side of the road was just littered with them

stevej37 12-06-2021 03:51 PM

FF
If you were talking deer carcasses...we have you beat!
Truck tire skins are plentiful here also.

Oh hell no.

Recaps were fine for a car that would top out at 60 under ideal conditions. We have roads in Oklahoma right now that the legal speed limit is 80, and most drivers are pushing that limit.

Semis still use them, and I wish they were illegal. I had a 18 wheeler shed a tread as I was passing it. I was in my 914 with the roof off at the time and that tread went right over my head and landed in on the shoulder and the road right behind me. I missed death be just a few feet.

stevej37 12-07-2021 09:23 AM

The company that I worked for in the early 80's used re-caps for all their truck tires.
It was common to see these tires with less than 10K miles with a separation between the cap and the tire. Sometimes they would go another 40-50K miles with no problem.

They never, never used them on the front wheels.

You are in Michigan? Treat yourself to new snows. I hate sliding into stuff.

Por_sha911 12-07-2021 09:34 AM

I just failed reading comprehension.
I thought the title was Who is missing THREAD and I was all set to say "don't know, don't care" LOL.

stevej37 12-07-2021 09:38 AM

^^^ Ha! That was the intent.
I thought about starting a "Who is pissing thread ?"

I think my track driving exceeded my Michelin 4S tires design parameters:

^^^ Have it capped/re-capped. :D

stevej37 12-09-2021 09:35 AM

Today was a great test for my half-tread. Had no problem..it just keeps pawing through the snow.
New tires will wait.

stevej37 12-09-2021 10:09 AM

re-cap?

^^^ Nice! Can't go wrong with Michelin's
