as i start to contemplate what i pack for an upcoming flight.

i got to wondering. could we EVER bring a knife on an airplane flight? like back in the day? way back? talking travel flights. a tiny knife?

In 1995 I was 14 and went to Indonesia on a 3 week school field trip (fancy private school).
I bought an ~18" sword on Java and brought it in my carryon for a couple of legs of the trip.
Finally in Taiwan, before the last flight home to the states, someone in security found it in my luggage and gave it to the flight crew to hold on to for that trip. Gave it back to me in the Seattle airport, though.

Back in 99 a friend took her SAK along with her to Chile and it was in her coat pocket.

I don't remember ever taking a pocket knife in my pocket, but I believe you can have stuff in checked baggage. Of course, these days, it may get stolen by the baggage checkers.

I've had these things make it through security on my key ring since 9/11.



I've also heard of someone having to get rid of one of these. But I've had them go through on a key ring just fine.



I have a feeling that in the past, tiny pocket folders probably made it through. My grandfather used to carry a small folding buck knife. I'm guessing the blade was around 2" ±a bit that I mostly remember him using to clean under his finger nails. I'll bet that sort of thing would get through back in the day.

I always took a huge knife (in my pocket) when I travelled to the big city for work as I often was walking around in rough areas late at night.

Just have a cute 12 year old girl carry it for you.

My family and I were going through security a couple years ago and my middle daughter was into making friendship bracelets made of string and a series of knots. She figured it would be a good way to pass time on the plane.

She needed a pair of scissors, so she took the pair with 6 inch blades from a kitchen drawer and packed them in her carry on.

It got picked up on the xray and her bag was searched. Evidently there is some allowable size and he played around with the ruler until he satisfied himself that he’d done enough due diligence to justify giving her back the scissors but suggested she pack them in her suitcase next time.

Tiny pocket knives are not allowed. But huge long steel knitting needles are okay. Makes perfect sense.

I used to take my little Victorianox knife with tiny scissors, fingernail file and 1.5 inch blade, but left it home after the summer of '01.

I used to carry my knife on flights all the time.

Now, if I check a bag I bring one, otherwise no.

I knew a guy who got all the way to his hotel in London before he realized he had a loaded 45 mag in his carry on..... got through all kinds of security with it.

LOL, funny to be hearing about it. Probably not nearly as funny to be living it. Hell, they'll get you in the UK for having a kitchen knife. They'd probably have put him under the Tower of London if they'd known.

Can you imagine how badly it would go these days for folks trying to hijack a plane with box cutters? Preposterously stupid idea - wouldn't get past first base.

I think they should start allowing little blades again, what is the diff? I had a money clip I carried for years with a teensy 1.5" blade. Forgot about it but found by security, had to snap the blade off to make it through. Otoh: Knitting needles? Damn! No way!

Course all the tsa I see is security theater.

Put your knive(s) in your checked in luggage. Not the carry-on. No problem.
My brother-in-law collects knives and when he comes out every year from Missouri to California, he purchase some and packs them in his checked luggage.

I’ve carried a Swiss tech like masrum through TSA at least 100 times just have another key or two on the ring.
