Meat Thermometer Recs
In the market for one to check when meat is in my smoker. A few weeks ago I broke the ACCURITE digital I got from my dad.
I think the probe got too hot and now it won't register a temp. Or it was me dropping it since it was hot. Either way, it doesn't work. It turns on but no temp, does still show the max desired temp though. I like the probe on a metal chord type thing. Have used a analog just stick it in type and still have a decent one of those. I need something for use in smoker for tri tip. All suggestions are appreciated. |

Inkbird, wifi. I bought mine used on ebay for half the Amazon price. Has capacity for 4 probes-I use one for smoker temp and others for meat. |
I bough a few of these when they were in infancy on Kickstarter...
Gave to my brothers, cousins, friend as holiday gifts.. https://meater.com/ Its wireless.. and the app is good...both of my brother use theirs frequently.. Only complaint is connectivity drops at like 30 feet... but you can make a mesh network using another device App: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1639002999.jpg You can see when I opened the oven door to rotate the pan |
I second the Meater. I started off with a single bluetooth model. I liked it so much I bought "The Block", which is a WiFi module with 4 thermometers. You can drive to the store and still check your cook.
The ONLY thing, you cannot let them go above about 500F. The device is OK, but it melts the internal glue. |
Not a leave in but the Thermapen from Thermoworks is the best instant read I have used. Period.
Have a few of their other products to0. The leave in wireless probes from Meater look interesting. |

For the price point, the best you can get. I do a lot of BBQ, I use it to check and make sure the meat probe is being honest. |

I keep my original in the travel trailer during the season and have a back lit original for home. |
The Dot.

I have an older gen thermopen and its been a badass. sucks its slower than the new version. but for oven and smoker, it is my understanding you do not want to go opening and closing the cooking vessel to check temps. that's where the probe thermometer excels. I use the Dot also by Thermoworks. it is a metal sheathed probed covered by some high-temp silicon at the end. its been flawless. it saves my tri-tips which I found to be a BEATCH to cook because of the quickly tapering end. |

I do a fair amount of Boston butt, ribs, and brisket just a little. I usually only grab the analog stick in thermometer very late in the game to see if we are at stopping point. This is mainly b/c I know how much time is necessary to render the fat and just don't have to fool with it that much. Starting to love the tri-tip thing though. And this is really the only one I use a leave in thermometer for, so I'm hoping to not spend a bundle. Last time out I had the tapered end too close to the opening for the fire box in my smoker. That end was toast but the rest was outstanding. I don't remember what I was cooking but it was on my Weber gas grill, pretty sure the outer temp gauge was showing around 500 degrees. I was using the Acurite leave in probe and something fried the probe. Probably the only time I had ever used the thing on gas grill. |

and Thermoworks is the only thermometer company out there that I know of, with a Technical Support department. I called them with a question, and the nice lady said, "let me transfer you to tech support" I was..whaaat? the tech support talked to me and said, "let me give you a coupon for a discount (50%? been a couple years)"..so I bought the DOT. |
That Dot thing looks good. Plus it appears to have a replaceable probe.

The thermoworks stuff is great... i have been using a Dot and a Thermapen for a couple of years, and just upgraded to the Smoke X4 a few weeks ago.
I'd recommend ordering one of their probe spools to go with the dot. They keep with probe wires nice and tidy when not in use. |

Thermapen +++(as many +s as it takes)
Solid unit, comes with a calibration cert which warms my OCD engineer heart, and in lots of fun colors. Their wired timer/thermo unit has proven good for us, but maybe for only a year. To this point, it's been great as well. |
