So I finally saw it tonight.
Great sets, great cinematography. The story stayed somewaht true to the original but there were enough changes that this could have been another take on Romeo and Juliet that stood on it's own, set maybe in Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit or some other city with rival gangs or a family and a complelty different score, rather then try and redo and complete with a classic. I wasn't totally happy with the casting of Tony and Maria and their song performances were a bit weak for me. There were a few "woke" political references that could have been left out. All that being said it was enjoyable and worth seeing a much better remake then A star is Born in my opinion. |

Here's my gripe: Captions are not subtitles. My tinnitus is bad enough that I watch most movies with the captions on. Spielberg or Disney or whoever half assed the English captions, 90% of the Spanish dialog was just captioned "[Speaking in Spanish]", rather than actually displaying the dialog. Now I don't claim to be bilingual by any means, but I retain enough high school Spanish that I can get the gist of what's going on. I switched the captions over to Spanish for a bit, and it translated everything, I never saw [Hablando en ingles] once. Anybody asking why I didn't just turn up the volume, the granddaughter's room is right above the TV, and she was taking a nap. |

We saw the movie a couple of weekends ago. I had the Harmon Kardon soundbar and sub cranked up a bit and it was pretty good. Sad story though.
