I think the battery got overcharged...

And to think most people remove excess equipment and drill holes for the lightening effect when it can happen in a split second!

It was not just a pop, I guarantee it sounded like intensely loud thunder.

Back in the days of being a kid we were riding or bikes on the cart paths of a Air Force base golf course that was closed due to threat of rain and lightning. A storm popped up and we headed to a shelter on the course that was just a concrete bench and some seats under a wide roof, with a lightning rod on the roof. There were four kids and all of the hair on our heads stood up, and then a blinding flash and a huge thunder clap at the same instant and we were all almost deaf. The lightning rod did it's job, and protected the building and us. The rod was melted and scorched, and we were just stunned. As soon as the rain let up some we all pedaled home. Just feet from a lightning strike is not a fun experience and something I hope to never repeat.

I would suspect that occupants of the car's cell phone were fine, unless they were plugged in to the car to charge them.

I was in the Boy Scouts. We were camping in a forest in FL. Had a similar experience at night, night turned to day, huge simultaneous thunder clap. Turns out the lightning hit one of the adults in his tent that was 15-20' away from my tent. A min or two after the strike, we started hearing a very soft "help me." At first we thought it was someone screwing around, but then realized that it was the guy next door. He was semi-paralyzed.

The next morning, he was back to normal. He had a burn on one hip where there'd been a knife in a sheath on his belt. His wedding ring had a couple of little pock marks. The floor of his tent had a 5-10 small burn holes. He said that he saw his machete jump up and flip over.

Yep, that would sound like a nuke going off inside the car.

That was bad luck. I would have thought the lightening would have chosen a building or flagpole as a good place to earth.

Good thing the car is still under warranty.

My wife is rightly scared stiff of lightning. Once walking to school in the rain (8-9 years old) there was a sudden flash, bang, and she was momentarily blinded and scared stiff. She ran home crying she'd been hit by lightning. Obviously as she was still alive here parents didn't believe her until they went to close her little ambarella and every joint was now fused solid. Second time was when our eldest was a baby. Baby was down for a nap, wife was doing some planting just outside the front door. Sky is still clear and sunny, but black clouds coming from the horizon. She's about to pack up to avoid the coming storm and BNAG. She's blind and deaf for several seconds, she crawls on her hands and knees feeling for the door and getting inside panicked more about the baby than herself. As her vision returns she's still deaf, gets to the baby, who's obviously screaming her poor little head off which she still couldn't hear as the deafness lasted a bit longer. Upshot of that one was a split in the magnolia (Still alive now 26 years later) that's in front of the house, she had been gardening between the tree and the house. Every light bulb in the house had shattered, ever circuit breaker had tripped, the AC and Furnace had both been fried, but it was fall so after AC use, before the heating kicked in.

She has no intention of finding out if the third time's a charm.

That's beautiful. I've never seen the flames leftover after the initial burst. Just a crooked line of puffy fire clouds in the air.

My family, including our black Lab mix, Peppy, the smartest dog I ever met, were all sitting on the veranda, Peppy at our feet, watching a serious thunderstorm. Quite peaceful actually.

Then KABOOM! We were all stunned especially Peppy who somehow without moving a muscle went straight up and ended on dad’s lap peeing like a leaky water pump.
