Interesting take on this in the WSJ, there is a tax angle, current legislation allows an artist to pay cap gains on sale of rights at a max of 20% vs ordinary income tax on royalties. Also, fear of the net worth tax coming onboard may also have driven the deal.

Early Bruce shows were flat out amazing, as he aged they became more spotty, some still great but not as frequently.

Seeing him at the Stone Pony before he became the Boss was a rare treat.

Methinks that goes for any band .... seeing them in a club with a few hundred before they make it "big" .... but that's just me :).

Back in the daze, the arenas were smaller too 15-17K, and Bruce's shows were 4+ hour, HIGH energy, with virtually everyone knowing every single word to each song (he only had 4-5 albums).... don't know how he and the band did it.... they WERE epic.

Bruce didn't have to sing :) .... the crowd did and even provided the grunts....

"The River" tour was my last shows.... I moved on, but so glad I caught him back then. Wish I had been there with Flatbutt too :D!

Right, but why did the buyer buy it? No amount of placement in tv commercials and movies can recoup $500mm, let alone turn a profit.

COMPLETELY AGREE. I used to like his music, somewhat, but then he went all politico. He’s a tool. Same with Roger Waters, he’s MUCH worse.

I now just rip off youtube anything he does that I want- if there ever comes such a tune. Much like I will do with Motley Crue.

Bruce is a ****ing diva.

Easy, you're low-hanging fruit with bad taste in music.

Everything is a snappy comeback when you're involved.

W/ $500M I’d be a ****ing diva, too.

In fact, I am so good I can be one with a LOT less money, like 499.5M less.

ZZ Top supposedly selling their catalog and rights for 50 million.

Now that Sony owns Bruces music they can use it wherever, however they wish. They can use it in movies, video games, commercial ads whatever. That'll be a significant savings.
