The Boss doesn't have to tour to pay the bills anymore!

Bruce sold the rights to his catalog for $500 MILLION bucks .... heads are gonna explode :D

Mebbe he'll be at the Stone Pony New Year's Eve?

Gimme some Badlands and the Promise Land .... or let there be Darkness...

Rock on....

"And your papa says he knows that I don't have any money.
Well tell him this is his last chance, to get his daughter in a fine romance
Because the record company, Rosie, just gave me a big advance...."

KFC911 12-16-2021 03:58 PM

^^^^ You know ;)

Steve Carlton 12-16-2021 04:01 PM

Well... he worked hard. I had a friend say over 30 years ago he'd pay for my ticket if I didn't like the show. Saw him at the Oakland Coliseum basketball arena and it was well worth it.

KFC911 12-16-2021 04:09 PM

Late 70s .... college daze, a few epic arena shows .... like no other back then. I moved on to others tho'....

And what a band .... the E Streeters could rock and so did Bruce :).

LWJ 12-16-2021 04:16 PM

Impressive.

I enjoy his recorded work for the most part but I saw him live and absolutely hated it.

I understand that most don’t feel this way.

And I have seen & played more than a few rock shows.

I guess I am a rock snob???

Feel a little bad/weird about it. Oh well. He got paid.

On my own list of top 100 bands...
He would be in the bottom third.

He might be in mine too .... but he could rock an arena in the late 70s...

How about the Silver Bullet Band Live at Cobo Hall then ;)?

I moved on to blues and improvisational jam band stuff after college .... smaller venues too. But they rocked the arenas back when...

So that is why I saw him on the news tonight while I was on the phone to Japan with my grandkids.

Ok, how does this pencil out? How in the world, in the current music royalty climate, is anyone ever going to recoup that money? No one buys CDs anymore. At best they buy individual songs from iTunes. But Bruce's fanbase is all over 50 and they all already have his entire catalogue. And streaming takes about a billion streams to make $1500. Are his songs going to be used in enough commercials and movies that the royalties cover this? I don't think so.

chapo 12-16-2021 08:11 PM

Yep, commercials, TV, and movies

It doesn't make sense. that's why he did it. Bird in the hand etc.

Rick Lee 12-16-2021 08:30 PM

Right, but why did the buyer buy it? No amount of placement in tv commercials and movies can recoup $500mm, let alone turn a profit.

Since Springsteen doesn't need the money, I'm thinking he'll do something charitable with the sale.

Sony will NFT a fraction of the catalog and make $1B in the 10 minutes after the ink is drying.

The proverbial Golden Goo$e trumps a Freebird in the hand...

I'd bet Seger made more on those annoying Chevy truck commercials than he ever did in rock 'n roll....

I told ya heads would explode....

"Start Me Up" .... like Keef needs the $$$ for that riff .... cha-ching ;)!

Remember when it was called "selling out" and no respectable rocker would? Then yer old :D

masraum 12-17-2021 04:12 AM

If there was anything that I could sell for half a billion dollars, it'd be gone in a split second.

Seahawk 12-17-2021 04:24 AM

He did get to keep all the rights to the songs from "Nebraska", so...

He is 72 years old, why not?

I would love to read the contract, though.

pksystems 12-17-2021 04:52 AM

How much dirt does he have on Sony execs? He has what? A handful of decent songs.

flatbutt 12-17-2021 04:57 AM

The Boss was getting upwards of a grand per seat for his Broadway show. 500 MM is crazy money....good for him. Maybe he'll run for POTUS.

aschen 12-17-2021 06:19 AM

I could see it being a good investment, It is basically an appreciating asset that can be milked for a couple 10s of millions a year and then sold for a massive profit if the cash flow gets too boring.

Remember a lot of the beatles catalog was sold to Michael Jackson in the 80s for 50 million, and the estimated current value is 1 billion. Boss isnt quite up there with the beatles but he is about as a list/iconic as you can get. Maybe well bought.
