Longshot, but does anyone have a connection at Zoom?

Sick people out there. Funeral home's 1st mistake, they posted the zoom meeting info and password for my aunt's memorial today in her obituary.

Effin hecklers joined the meeting, and were bashing religion, the priest, her casket, then started dropping eff bombs in the first few minutes. 2nd mistake, the clueless funeral home/director, instead of killing the mikes or dropping the offenders, killed the whole feed. They obviously sold my cousins a service they could not deliver, and now we all missed out on her memorial.

I should think Zoom would have some sort of way to track the members of that meeting.

dafischer 12-21-2021 05:46 PM

WTF is wrong with people? That's absolutely repugnant. My condolences to your family.

unclebilly 12-21-2021 07:34 PM

It is of no benefit to you now. They needed to set up the funeral as a webinar which would have allowed them to control who joined and control who could speak and share content. This however costs money…

I think the most you'll get is a ip.

Out here during covid in the classroom. Zoom was insecure. People would get on during the online class time and play porn. One of 2 major districts in Phoenix had it happen to twice, then switched to webex. Which puts everyone in a waiting room and the teacher puts people into the meeting.

Tishabet 12-21-2021 08:25 PM

Oh man, my blood boils just reading this... whatever happened to basic human decency? Seriously awful, sorry to hear this dad911.

This being said, I don't think you will get anywhere with Zoom even if you had a contact and they opened the doors up for you... let's say they gave you the name and address of the people who heckled the funeral (which is not realistic, they probably have email address and IP at most) what then? IANAL but as despicable as the behavior may be I'm not sure there is a crime committed here.

edit: did some googling, looks like in some states intentionally disrupting a funeral is a misdemeanor.

LinkedIn is your best shot at getting close to someone in the org that matters. Short of that there is always the local news station.

astrochex 12-22-2021 12:40 AM

This is horrible. So sorry your family had to endure this, dad911.

HobieMarty 12-22-2021 01:06 AM

That is terrible and the people that would do such a thing are lower than pond scum. Condolences and prayers for your family.

Hard to imagine some people are so scummy and sink so low. That said, I think I would put this behind me and move on. My condolences to you and your family dad911.

dad911 12-22-2021 02:43 AM

Thanks guys. Helped to vent, appreciate the kind words.

Sooner or later 12-22-2021 02:56 AM

How terrible. Sorry to hear about your loss.

RNajarian 12-22-2021 05:41 AM

If it is any consolation, for every heartless jackass who would hurt you and your family like this, there are 1000s who would share your grief and emphasize with you.

It would be nice to set up a sting. Post a fake funeral in an obituary and have pros ready to nab IPs when these jackwads Zoom Bomb the event, and prosecute, prosecute, prosecute.

vash 12-22-2021 09:40 AM

SOB!! i am so sorry on so many levels.

Deschodt 12-22-2021 10:23 AM

Zoom are the worst - due to their success I imagine. I work in IT and they haven't responded to a single enterprise level query or help ticket, not one...

recycled sixtie 12-22-2021 10:36 AM

I would have asked for a refund. So sad.:(

I dislike social media ... a lot! Companies like Zoom, however, probably pay a lot more attention to what's said in that world than they do anything else.

So if you want to get their attention, spread the word.

Sorry to hear this.
Lowest of the low.

Since CV hit, they have ruled the video conference world. I suspect they've got more business than they can support, and are probably raking it in hand over fist. They probably prioritize support based on the biggest spenders.

Doubt it, like I said, since CV hit, they are practically a monopoly. There are a bunch of vendors that provide similar products, but I think Zoom is hammering all of them.

Yet, according to a survey by EmailToolTester, Zoom not only prevailed but rose above all other similar platforms, including Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Skype. Zoom was named the most popular virtual call/meeting platform in the world and ranked No. 1 in 44 of the 118 countries polled.

Countries that named Zoom the preferred app included Japan, the U.K., the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Russia and South Korea. In the U.S., Zoom boasts 59.9% of the online market share. Zoom has 300 million daily meeting participants.

Meanwhile, 41 countries--including Poland, Iceland, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, each with a ruling market share of more than 40%--said Microsoft Teams was the No. 1 go-to digital meeting platform.

Coming in at No. 3 was Google Meet, with 21 countries such as Denmark, Italy and Romania choosing the platform. In Romania, Google Meet holds just under 50% of the market share.

Trailing behind in fourth place was Skype, which saw the biggest loss with a 25.8% drop year-over-year in market share.

Zoom owns almost half--48.7%--of the global market share and has seen the biggest year-on-year growth of all the platforms, with a 22.3% increase.

Sorry to hear about your experience, Dad911. That's really horrible. Agreed, the funeral home should have had someone on as an admin that could mute and drop people as needed.

People are idiots.

There are times when it seems like it would be fun to be able to physically assault someone through a phone.

Gogar 12-22-2021 03:50 PM

That's awful, sorry.

Zoom can look at the meeting for you and perhaps they would ban the accounts that caused trouble, but it's quite likely that those accounts were only used once or deactivated by now anyway. Anyone can create a number of accounts, for free.

There's no 'true' recourse because it's a free service and no crime was truly committed except the crime of being an a-hole.

and YES any person that's spent any amount of time on Zoom would know how to admin and turn off the camera and audio for EVERYONE in the meeting, and have the service viewable only, as it should have been.

Well, unless you work for CNN I guess. Then you might not know how to do it.
