Small house. Big view. Big garage.

Apparently so everyone on the block can watch everyone else watch television and eat breakfast in their underwear.

My only thought is that the architects and the potential buyers live in a fantasy/academic world and the architects are designing houses that would be perfect for the top of a mountain with that 'big view' you mention.

Somehow it makes sense, those houses sell. There's a developer near us that pumps out the ugliest worst to live in houses I've ever seen. I guess he saves money on architects... the people that move into those houses all move and find another sucker every 2-3 years. There is such a thing as screwed up architecture.

I always wondered if the buyers of these nasty places were human. Turns out a guy I've known forever bought some giant thing with cheap trim in an awful packed burbclave. Got a new job, had to move out of state. Me being a sucker I showed up to help load the moving truck. His garage... full of tools all arranged just so... still in the package. Utensils in the drawer... still in their shrink wrap. The couple 'lived' there for 3 years and never used the kitchen. I started joking that they were robots, or aliens trying to pretend to be human. They must have bought all this stuff to populate the house... garden shears... weed wacker... ya know... stuff... and then never used it.

There's a house near me... was for sale a few years ago and they somehow let me walk through. Really I think the nicest house I've ever been in. Instant love. Big house too on a relatively small yard. Felt so strange that this place that is seriously a work of art isn't sited on some 1000 acres of forest. House really calls for it.

Looks lots nicer in person. All that fir glows a color that can't be captured with a camera.

So... I don't care about having a big house, also don't really care about having a view. I think I'm more about being in a place that makes me feel good, so my vote goes to: small house in a nice environment. Its an idea I think I've been learning for decades.

If you are in an area where the view is a selling point, you should spend more time outside on the big deck, not inside cleaning redundant spaces.

Before we bought the current house, we lived on the top floor (5) of a small apt complex near downtown Houston. The "neighborhood" that the apt was in was a neighborhood from 1920s Houston. The houses were mostly relatively small with mostly 5000sqft plots. Any time one of the old homes was sold, it was razed and replaced with 2 modern 2500-4200sqft homes on lots that were 2500 or less (a few times they squeezed 3 homes on a slightly larger than 5k plot).

They were the same, tons of windows facing the road, hardly any facing the sides (because that was the wall of the other home that was 18-24" away, assuming they were detached). Yes, they were all essentially the same.

Small house, big view. I actually use about 50% of my current house.

Another small house big view vote.
Room for a garage at the big view house?

You can change a lot of things in and around your property. But the thing you can't change is the location and surroundings

a small view and a place to relax

I prefer an nice comfortable house, with my oversized 3 car garage and a bathroom in the garage. I have never in my life cared to just sit and look at nature, even at the beach or in the mountains. That is just too boring for me. I want to be doing something.

Our paid for house is not that big, just 2,800 sq feet, but there is just my wife and myself with two dachshunds, and three cars. Maybe if I lived in San Diego with the perfect weather, no bugs and no winds I might like a better view, and any house with a three car garage is likely to be millions of dollars and not in my price range.

I vote for small house/big view.

With the separate 4-car garage, of course.

When the pandemic first hit, I semi-tried to convince Mrs. Noah to move to Hawaii. We could sell our house, and use the equity to buy in cash a small place on the North Shore. Literally on the water. The backyard was a small patch of grass ending in a concrete seawall. Those houses in our price range were only about 1800 sq ft, though. She vetoed the idea. Too far from her home (family) in New England.

I have a somewhat small house with a beautiful view of the lake and an amazing sunset every night.
What I don't like is the 50 ft. wide lot. The neighbours are closer than the lake!
(Not sure why I can't upload a pic. Just lots of dinging)

+1. We want to move somewhere nice but until then I'm fine in the little house with a short commute. I do have a 4 car garage with A/C so at least that's bearable.

I'm amused when my wife says she wants a tiny house since she has all but one closest (mine) and half a bedroom filled with clothes, shoes, and accessories.

Define small! For some, it may be 4,500 sq. feet condo oceanfront (thus views until "infinity"). That said, infamous sayin in real estate is "location, location, location". Figure out the rest... I know what I chose ;):D

dw1 12-23-2021 12:46 PM

You can always expand the house.

Probably better to be looking over an enormous yoga studio.

When we lived in town, there was a Whole Foods about 1/3 mile from our place. Across the street from the WF there was a business center that had two different yoga places. That was the BEST grocery store ever! I miss that Whole Foods.

Well, big enough for a 911 on a lift with another car under the 911 and then a second bay next to the 911 for the workbench, tools, etc....

:D

What is really needed is a UK edition man-cave!

island911 12-23-2021 08:08 PM

A small house with a big view almost always means close neighbors. So....

This guy has the best channel. Small homes of all shapes, sizes, materials, with Big views.
