Went fishing today

The weather was perfect for fishing in the gulf today. Calm winds and seas of 2’ or less, 80 for the high.

The grandson had a good day today, caught the first fish and quite a few after. We were about 20 miles out, caught mostly snapper and grunts, a few grouper and other various fish.

The boat is running good, I added a anchor roller and bought a table to cut bait on. We buy live shrimp, and frozen squid and sardines, And also use some artificial bait. We also cut up some live fish we catch for bait, squirrel fish mostly. We didn’t use the anchor, just drifted around, motor to various spots.

We left my house around 7:00 and fished till around 2:30. We filled a couple of 5 gallon buckets of keeper fish to clean. Cruised out at around 40 miles per hour and burned 53 gal of gas. The boat only gets around 1.5 mpg.

I’m exhausted, but it was a good day.

Another day fishing with the son and grandson. We went around 15 miles offshore and fished till noon. Grandson had a hockey game last night and didn’t get home till late, so was a little tired.

We caught a variety of fish, kept around 40. The son said we had to start throwing some of the smaller snapper back as he didn’t want to clean them.

Been awhile since a fishing post. They closed red grouper and are closing lane snapper till January so we went out after lane snapper, grunts and porgies. Caught quite a few and threw the grouper back, they were short anyway.

On the way back, we were around 40-45 miles from home, I let the grandson take us back. He general sleeps and I figure he needs to learn how to handle the boat. I’ve quized him from time to time when we are out, which way is home. If he takes a 90 degree heading he will at least hit florida. He got us all the way back to the dock, I did dock the boat and gave him directions thru the canals and in the harbor.

I’m 64 and he is 8. I’m hopeing that in a few years I can sit back and let him take me out.

It was calm and I didn’t let him get above 30 mph.

Nice pics! I couldn't help but think that even though the water was pretty calm, I'd find a way to get sea sick!

That is just great.

My kids were driving boats and SeaDoo’s at that age or earlier.

They never forget it...this stuff is golden.

Well done.

We try and go out when the forecast is 2’ or less. We have been out there a few times where you couldn’t stand up without holding on to something. That’s not much fun. Also I’ve had friends that have gotten sick, they just have to hang over the side and deal with it, it’s a hour and a half boat ride back.

I do try and take pics when this happens, just if I need them later.

He’s a good kid. Next month my son is taking him deer hunting at my sisters place in Mo. They will be in the same stand, hopefully he will get a shot at one.

Went out with some friends today. Amazing how many friends I now have since I’ve moved to SW Florida and have a boat. Anyway it was a a good day and we caught quite a few, it was in the low 80’s today, but a cold front is moving thru tonight and the highs are only getting into the low 70’s .

Here are a couple of grouper that a friend caught.

I’m jealous…water temps getting a little cold here in SC and not getting much action. Cute picture of your grandson fallen asleep. About how I usually feel on the ride back home!

That will definitely happen, when I was growing up my dad had a series of boats, culminating with a 40' Crisovich.. I don't remember how old I was but I was operating boat from a very young age.. when I was in my early teen.. we would often go fishing every weekend..

I would often run the boat from the dock to the fishing ground...Dad would be downstairs with his buddies.. setting up the gear prepping bait.... Once we broke the inlet he would take a LORAN shot (Navy surplus APN9) climb to the bridge and give me a heading.. then I was on my own...

When I finally learned how to dock the boat... I usually ran it for the whole trip...unless things got really ugly... even then my Dad would ask if I could handle things... letting me opt out or not..

So yes.. let him run the boat as much as you're comfortable.

slight hi-jack...

This is how the US Navy and air force navigated in WWll.. Loran support stopped in 2010
( I thought it was earlier)

https://www.loran-history.info/research/loran_a/operating_instructions/APN-9_user.pdf

Trying to get a good reading and co-ordinates on a rough day was a challenge to say the least..

Its so easy now

Great thread. I used to fish for those Red Grouper too when I lived on that side. Have to go pretty far out to get into enough depth. Like you said - it's a long boat ride!

We had a neighbor when I was very young who had a boat and did a lot of fishing. This was in Virginia. He had daughters - no sons - and since my Dad wasn't into, he'd take me and my brother along on some of his trips. That's where I learned to fly fish, now that I think of it.

Keep up the great work and thanks for the postings and pics!
