Only in L.A.:

Or maybe in other places, what do I know. I only live here. :)

The parking lot at Hollywood Home Depot just now, the busiest HD in the country. It pains me to park any decent car in this lot, the spots are too small and people are loading pipe and other building materials into their cars and trucks. It's literally a joke, the worst place to park in town.

Apparently some people never got that memo. Here is a new RR SUV, a quick online search puts this @ roughly $600k: :D

And here is the more down market Bentley SUV, already dented tailgate. I guess they don't GAF:

I also saw this cool JDM Mitsu 4x4 van. Hot female driver but no photos of that. :)

What's the deal with the double white lines?
We don't have those.

Dennis, that's where those rich and famous come down the hill to get a garden hose or a light bulb. I cried when they close the OSH across the street. I refuse to go to that home depot. Its the worst in socal both in their staff and the people, along with the bums that frequent that hell hole. My workmen will not go there, instead, they sometimes get over to the valley or buy materials elsewhere before they get to the job.

My men will only go there if there are two of them, one to stay to watch their things, the other to shop in the store. If not, their things will guarantee to be gone. The homeless will get it for sure.

stevej37 01-11-2022 05:11 PM

A single line works ok...if you park between them.

That is not even remotely true. I've shopped there hundreds of times with zero issues and never had my vehicle or contents messed with. I just bought a power tool an hour ago and got perfectly fine service from the employees. I did have to hunt one down but he was't far away. Good help is hard to find these days, I'll give you that. The young people working there were fine to me. The OSH was good at one time but it was also a PIA store, IMO.

flatbutt 01-11-2022 05:25 PM

I park my Taco as far away in a remote corner as possible. Sometimes I'll park in a neighboring lot because ...you know.

look 171 01-11-2022 05:34 PM

I haven't been in there for over 5-6 years now. After the last time dealing with their associated / store manager, I decided to just drive elsewhere. None of my sub contractors want to go there unless they really need something to finish the job that day.

My guys wouldn't go there with their pick up trucks if they have few tools or something valuable. They have to keep their eye on it at all times. Just a years ago, my guy drove down the hill on his way home and stopped by that 7-11 across the street, for a cup of coffee, with his stack-able tool box bungee corded to the back of his truck. It took less then a minutes, only to watch two guys drive up, lifted a 150+lbs tool box into another truck and drove off. All he can do was run out and screamed at them. Cops were near, drove by and said,"Sorry, nothing we can do". "Claim insurance or don't leave your stuff out". Drove off.

I was up near the Greek all morning and do not miss driving pass Hollywood Blvd. As a matter of fact, I try not to get neat there.

Baz 01-11-2022 05:38 PM

Even with my battered old truck I tend to park way away from as many as possible.....

I figured out long time ago that people (including me) want to see old classic cars and not new cars.

If I was at some BBQ place in BFE having lunch mid ride and a brand new Ferrari or Lambo showed up with a Mercedes 300SL right behind it, 9 out of 10 people are going to look at the Merc.

new cars are just cars

LWJ 01-11-2022 05:57 PM

600k for a SUV...

Mine is worth $12k. Old Landcruiser.

I haul drywall, skis, motorcycles, dogs, and similar.

Don’t really have a response to a RR SUV. And I live in an upscale (Oregon) community.

Truth there...I'd have cluelessly walked right by the Rolls and Bentley SUVs. All SUVs look alike to me.

$600k? It’s all relative, but I just don’t see it.

On the New Jersey turnpike last week there was a dude with a RR suv playing road rage games
with a redneck in a beater Jeep Grand Cherokee They came very close to hitting each other several times
I thought he was crazy and I thought it cost 300K

yes. hence my comment.

interestingly the only place near me that has them is in a mall in a - shall we say - less nice neighborhood.

insignificant sample size of two, but you could extrapolate and say that ****ty areas and ****ty drivers are colocated.

nj is a no fault state. with decent insurance they both cost you what, $500, if you wreck them regardless of the actual vehicle value.

something to remember if you think the guy in the expensive car can't afford to total it. he probably can...

so the key is to trash it JUST enough to max his deductible

Or be able to be the one driving the new car.

If you are in a 600k car the deductible probably isn’t as big a deal as it is to the driver of the 3k one. One of the two will get a loaner while his is being fixed so the inconvenience is minimal...

Oh, it makes no sense at all. Like so many things today. It's about $150k worth of vehicle if you're being really generous. I think that the MSRP is somewhere around $400k but pandemic pricing puts them closer to $600k. There is one on Ebay for $750k asking:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2510209.m570.l1311&_nkw= rolls+royce+cullinan&_sacat=0

I've never seen so much obvious, stupid displays of wealth in my life as I have in the last year. This is not old money, to put it mildly. I see 20 year olds rolling around in these Cullinans, (parent's?), and what look like teenagers in spanking new Hellcat Durangos and Chargers. Keep in mind that almost all of these cars and trucks are selling for WAAAAY over sticker right now.

Crazy world. It's not going to end well. :)

You may be surprised. I paid $10k for my 1996 nearly three years ago and was offered $25k over the holidays.

Nice LC, nothing special...and this is in BF Maryland.

Well, if you had any game, you’d just walk up and ask her. Tell her she was going to make the day for countless old dudes and would she please smile?

Easy, Peasy.

Try going to Monaco and southern France. As one local told us: there are more Rolls Royces here than at the factory.

Zeke 01-12-2022 07:13 AM

Home Depot, Hollywood or Lakewood, just a total ****hole. I've parked around the corner where the fenced in side of the nursery is, a long way from any entrance and had my truck damaged by something that fell against it and slid down the side leaving long scratches.

I feel like a total sleazeball there and I haven't been there more than 2wice in 2 years. I buy everything i need including paint online. I check the prices and I'm not overpaying for the convenience of not having to go into hell.

Incidentally, we have 2 HD's within 2 miles of each other and the older one is different in the sense that it really is for contractors. A store manager told me that they stock more SKU's of serious building stuff and less in he way of table lamps and shades, that sort of thing. They have a hiring station in the corner of the lot, too. But it's wall to wall trucks in the lot with high theft.

I hate it. I'll drive 8 miles to a Lowe's instead because it's always a ghost town except on weekends when all the DIY'ers are out in force. A few cute mommies to boot.

Yes, miss OSH, but miss the original OSH stores way more than the reinvented ones owed by Lowe's, who ruined it and ran it in to the ground. I used to drive 20 miles to go to one before they opened one 3 miles from me. About the time they started selling appliances was when the beginning of the end started. Then they closed all the mid size stores and built much larger ones with super high prices. Millions invested and millions lost.

It sure seems challenging for these stylists to make these posh-brand SUVs feel special. In the past week, I've seen RR, Bentley, and Lamborghini SUVs and they all have the presence of a Q7.

I completely agree. The only thing that distinguishes them at all is trim; i.e. emblems and interior style, etc. The Bentley and RR have twin turbo V-12s, (W-12 in Bentley), so they are powerful but who gives a schit? I mean, spending the equivalent of a really nice house in most of the U.S. on an SUV that will depreciate like a tuna sandwich in a couple of years? In what world is that an intelligent purchase?

I should say that I consider $80k SUVs and PU trucks to be hugely stupid purchases for most people. It's basically the disposal of $$. This is just that, squared.

Took the words right out of my mouth!

911boost 01-12-2022 09:25 AM

I keep my utilitarian vehicles for a long time, my PU is 10 years old and I plan to keep the Land Cruiser for that at least, so I do not mind spending some $ to get exactly what I want and know it has been taken care of since day 1.

With that being said, I have seen RR and Bentley's SUV's on the road as well (was in Miami for work a bit ago) and they don't look that good. What is insane is that the dash clock option on the Bentley SUV is $160K!!!! Who in their right mind would pick that?

Oh and the HD's in the LA area can be a nightmare. Home Depot is required by law to provide an air conditioned place for the day laborers to wait, and a bathroom outside the store. When I was working with them in LA no one used the trailer that was provided and we had staff that spent all day trying to keep the day laborers off the actual property. I have stories I could tell.....

Then there were the gangs from the South American countries present at each location....

pwd72s 01-12-2022 09:26 AM

Like I said, I'd probably walk right past those SUVs...
But, I'd probably stop and eyeball your Scirocco...

Home Depot carries lumber that isn’t warped now? Gave up years ago and started using a real lumber yard.

Don’t really have a response to a RR SUV. And I live in an upscale (Oregon) community.

SUV's are the new coupes and sedans. And I get it. since 1999, I've driven an '88 911, '97 miata, '04 miata, and now an '08 Boxster. I'm used to not being able to see forward, backward or to the side because most vehicles are tall.

My wife's car is an '18 Subaru Outback. I think they come standard with 9" of ground clearance. They aren't as tall as an SUV, but they are fairly tall. Even in her car, I can't see squat most of the time because most vehicles on the road are tall.

I like to be able to see, so having an SUV that sits up and can see over cars is nice.

But even though I know that, a RR SUV or even the Lambo SUV seems crazy to me as well.

I got an email the other day from Porsche about the most powerful Cayenne yet, 630hp. The performance numbers are staggering. I'm sure that's not cheap either.
