It would have been a bigger win for the charity if it hadn’t been such a fugly car.

The word custom scares the bejesus out of me anymore . It is frequently the results of the bad taste of some one who has enough money to make it all come to fruition .

That car would not have bid to $100 k if not for the charity thing. I went to my first Mecum auction a few years ago. There was a 65 fastback that had been built for SEMA a few years prior. The mods were not terrible but not my thing. The bad part was the custom paint had deteriorated terribly. It bid to a low number that was no where close to reserve.

There are endless numbers of BAD customs. So many are just done by hacks and owners with no taste.

Bottom line, it is just a car, it can be fixed, and the money did go to a charity. I am extra happy I don't have to store that poor ugly thing in my garage.

Years ago I saw a 911 Cabriolet that was a Gimballa monstrosity, owned by Vanilla Ice. Honestly, no joke, I broke out laughing at how horrid it was. It was like someone was trying to make a car into a joke car for a movie. I felt bad for the poor car.

Yep, the Gemballa stuff is often really horrible, and that one in particular was REALLY horrible. They did/have continued to make horrible stuff.

"A fool and his money"

Are soon partying, as we used to say.

Honestly, I was expecting a lot worse after reading the comments here. I've seen a LOT worse, it just looks like a typical Boyd Coddington or other restomod gone wrong to me(?)

And the money was for charity. There are so many rich people out there giving money to hospitals these days, half a million is nothing. The person who won might have not even wanted the car at all. They will probably try to dump it on BaT for no reserve soon and be happy with whatever it brings.

Yep. The Gemballa and similar slant nose 911 cab creations should be killed with fire, they are hideous.

Car forums are a pissing match for clueless car guys

Clueless car guys: "If you don't value cars exactly like I do, then you are a sucker"

For anyone with a clue, it was plain to see from day one that the market would value this car at $175k. Anyone who was surprised at the final bid is just ignorant and clueless. It's that simple.

There are a lot of people on this forum who are consistently befuddled about prices in the marketplace. Since they literally can't understand what is happening, they resort to calling everyone else in the marketplace a sucker. These people are likely very narrowminded, and can only see the world in a single rigid inflexible manner. My way or the highway.

What is their mistake? Why do they not understand the market reality? They are assuming that everybody is maximizing THEIR utility function. So, when things happen outside of these narrow parameters, their minds melt, and conclude that anyone not exactly like me is a "sucker"

Not everyone values cars exactly the way you do. You may think an unrestored 120k mile G50 for $35k is the ultimate buy. Other people value comprehensive nut and bolt restorations over an average car. They are well aware they are paying a lot more for a frame off restoration build. The market does not only have one segment, yours.

There is a ton of value in the $165k build. $10k gearbox rebuild? $40k engine rebuild? $30k paint job? $30k suspension job? $30k interior restoration? $20k cosmetic mods? $10k 930 brakes? The list goes on. Now add the premium of a finished turnkey product instead of a 2 year project. A nice value for the buyer, getting $220k worth of build for $175k. It's like the buyer got the car for free.

Not everyone values this, or is willing to pay for this. Like you, maybe they want an unrestored G50 for $35k. But to call someone who wants these premium top shelf things, and has the means to pay for them a "sucker" is just ignorant and closed minded. They are not a sucker, but you are certainly clueless. The market has spoken.

Stop assuming that everybody is maximizing YOUR utility function. That's not how a marketplace works.

As Mustangs go, that was OK. I didn't care for the wheels (all 5 of them), but that would be an easy fix.
Cue jokes about high output Mustangs....

Best

If I was in a position to donate large amounts of money anyway, I'd take the car.
