NASA coverage said when returning from the moon, the heat shield gets about twice as hot as a spacecraft returning from low earth orbit. So looking forward to seeing how that heat shield did.

A few years ago, they showed pictures of a team a NASA engineers in a museum. They were allowed to peel apart layers of the heat shield on an old Apollo spacecraft. They did that because the old drawings did not give them enough detail how it was done in those days!

That's pretty cool. I guess if anyone would be allowed to do a semi-destructive test, it would be those involved in the new design. I imagine their new documentation/drawings will be more informative for the next generation.

Minutes away from the first American lunar landing since Apollo 17 back in 1972. Very cool.

And once again we have a space race, and the moon is the immediate goal. Things are heating up. China is up next with their planned landing in May.

The Artemis II mission, slated to launch early 2026, will fly four astronauts around the Moon. This mission will last for about 10 days and will be the first crewed test flight of the Space Launch System rocket, the Orion spacecraft, and the Exploration Ground Systems at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Florida needed to support them.

Not only will this mission be the first time in over 50 years that human beings have seen the Moon close-up, Artemis II will also prepare us for future human landings on the Moon starting with the Artemis III mission and help prepare for future missions to Mars.

NASA is moving up the timeline of its Artemis II mission, which could now take off and orbit the moon as soon as February 2026.
The U.S. space agency had previously committed to launching no later than the end of April.
Mike Armstrong looks at what Artemis II's four-member crew, including Canadian Jeremy Hansen, are saying as a new chapter of space exploration inches closer.
