US submarine hits underwater object in South China Sea

Didn’t this happen several years ago, when a sub hit an under sea mount? I want to say the front bumper on the sub was really crushed, exposing the sonar(?).

US submarine hits underwater object in South China Sea

https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/07/politics/us-submarine-collision-south-china-sea/index.html

(CNN) - A US nuclear powered submarine struck an object underwater in the South China Sea on Saturday, according to two defense officials.

A number of sailors on board the USS Connecticut were injured in the accident, the officials said. None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to a statement from US Pacific Fleet. It's unclear what the Seawolf-class submarine may have hit while it was submerged.

"The submarine remains in a safe and stable condition. USS Connecticut's nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were not affected and remain fully operational," the statement said. "The incident will be investigated." The US Navy did not specify the incident took place in the South China Sea, only that it occurred in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region.

Exactly. I thought they pretty much knew where everything was. I guess the only unknown, might be surfacing and hitting a boat on the way up, like the Japanese research vessel years ago.

I remember back in the 1980's the Russkies were sniffing around Subic and one of their subs got run over, shortly after we left

I have a relative now retired.
His job was continually updating undersea mapping information for the feds.
The earth ain't still.

****e happens. Not everything is a big conspiracy. You’d think a Nuke aircraft carrier was sophisticated enough to not hit an undersea mountain called Bishops Rock but, it happened and we went into Hunters Point to repair a huge gash in our hull just enough so that we could still make our deployment.

It’s like Some people just need to make up drama to liven up their lives.

Underwater object is pretty vague Michael. Curious=Conspiracy

Did it make the newspapers when you guys had the chance to take in a game at Candlestick when you were off while the welders were doing their thing? I would want to jump off a sub as soon as it was moving slow enough. You guys riding around in helicopters and submarines, on purpose. No thank you

Did they give y'all liberty there at all? I guess maybe not, too bad, good place for a pea coat

How deep in the water can you start if you are building an island? I guess that would be a matter of time really, how long to haul enough landfill.

Wait. This is 2021. My automobile will recognize an approaching object and deploy the brakes. Are we to accept that a modern nuclear sub has no sonar/radar or other systems to alert and avoid impacts?

Sonar and Radar rely on flashing a great big "HERE I AM Signal!"

We came into dry dock with a 10-12 deg list and were in dry dock a month or so for the emergency work and life aboard went on as normal except no Cat Shots, hahaha. Had to do it fast because we were scheduled for our IO deployment two months later.

When we came back from deployment we went back into Hunters Point dry dock for the formal repairs. They also took the opportunity to change a wobbly prop shaft that had been like that for years. That took several months. Other than moving most everyone into barracks off the boat, we still worked on board. The Navy took advantage of the time, moving up a lot of scheduled overhaul work. I spent most of my time overhauling my antennas and pulling out tons (literally) of old armored cable from disabled/removed systems.

Walking underneath her in the dock was exciting and slightly nauseating.

A cold torpedo isn't going to do anything to the hull except ring like a bell.. Maybe scratch the paint, hahaha.

Our Captain lost his command even though he wasn't the OD through most of the events leading up to our impact.

They are all passive on a sub.

Our cars don't chase invisible sheet while trying to be invisible too.
Iffn you are 1000 meters behind the bad guys you don't want to jump out and yell "SUPRISE!"

Maybe they pulled a "crazy Wang" and went to starboard at the top of the hour

Mines don't flash a signal either.
