Can you buy a new Porsche?
The title is a little sarcastic, but I sure am wondering.
I never bought a new Porsche and started by configuring a Cayman GTS and contacted 6 dealers with the code. Four dealerships never even responded. Two others got back to me and said they didn't know if or when they could get me a car. No explanation why. One said if I agreed to $25,000 over MSRP they would see what they could do. The other said they don't sell above MSRP but would get back to me. Three days later he called to say if I agreed to pay at least $5,000 above MSRP he MIGHT be able to get a car in a year or so. I asked if it is first come first served or if they collect orders and then sell to those individuals that were willing to pay the most over MSRP or configure the highest priced cars with the most options. He said he was offended and couldn't believe I would even ask such an insulting question. I reminded him he told me they don't sell above MSRP but now he wanted at least $5,000 above MSRP. The conversation went downhill from there. I understand the supply chain issues but I was left feeling they could care less about selling me a car unless I agreed to be taken to the cleaners. I'll survive as I've had a Porsche for 25+ years but I see my favorite marque in a whole new light. I guess I've been a little niave. |

That's all cars right now. You should read the horror stories of people trying to preorder the new electric pick up from Ford. The true cost of cars is way above MSRP because of the supply chain issues.
Good luck.

I could buy a new a Porsche, but that would be financially stupid and I would not.
The most expensive car I have ever bought is a $29,000 used Porsche Cayenne, and only did it because I could pay cash for it. Has nothing to do with the new cars shortage, just my philosophy on buying cars. But I am am very glad others are willing to go through all the trouble and depreciation of buying new cars so I can enjoy them later on ![]()

The dealers are being disgustingly greedy, I hope this comes back to bite them in the a$$ whenever things return to normal.

Harley went through this about 20 years ago, with the dealers all thinking they were in the cat bird's seat. I paid $3k over MSRP on what was then a $17,000 motorcycle (2000 model year), so percentage-wise, even worse than Porsche dealers are doing today.
Well, fast forward to 2013, when that motorcycle got ran over by a Ford F250. And yes, my wife and I were both astride that motorcycle at the time. When I was well enough again to go shopping, I bought the 2013 version of the same motorcycle. This time for $3k under MSRP (which had gone up just a little bit). In the end, I paid about $4k less for a much better, more advanced machine 13 years later. "They couldn't give them away" is a saying that comes to mind. So, yeah, Porsche's day will come. It's all cyclic. They'll wind up with a glut of cars, and those who took it up the ass today will be sending up their ass tomorrow. And those who bought their way to the front of the line won't be able to either sell nor trade in their cars, taking a decent hit on them as they try to offload them.

In 2004 I custom ordered my 2005 Cayenne. I spent more on options than I did on my first new car, a custom ordered 1992 Ford Thunderbird LX. (Over $22,000 in Cayenne options vs Thunderbird $15,560)
17 years later the Cayenne is still going strong. Glad I bought it new. However, now I doubt I would buy new, definitely CPO.

A couple weeks ago, someone on a local LA Porsche board I'm on asked the group if the dealer tacking on an extra $20K to a 911 GTS he wanted to buy was acceptable. Pretty much everyone that responded told him that was market value. So he bought it.
But no, I can't buy a new Porsche. I'm closer to the demographic that buys an entire car for $20K, as opposed to those who can pay 20 above sticker for one.

OP, I would be piss too, knowing that you are getting hosed but here's my take on this. Going in, warned or offer by the sales person that they will try if you pay X amount for a car. You do not have to take it but that's the number. I personally will not buy based on today's conditions, simple supply and demand. Try buying real estate. Its been like that for the past 15 year around here and some got rich, some became proud home owners, some took the money and ran. Same thing with many long hood owners, they aint lettin' go of their cars unless you have 6 figures. I suppose we can get upset at them too?

Sounds about right. Try to buy a GT3 as previously mentioned. A year ago 30k markup was about the entry, now 50k+. I am sorry, but a GT3 is not a 1/4 mil car. Let's see how things hold up now that tech stocks and crypto are going down. It isn't just the lack of cars but also the huge demand because people have money coming out their ass.
I recently bought a new truck and had to pay over sticker. But then I got about 40% more for my old truck than what I could have gotten in 2019. So, while it hurt, it wasn't too bad. And frankly, I have the impression it will get WORSE! And I am tired of putting my life on hold. I need a very reliable truck to go out and get deep into the outdoors. G |

Im naive, i dont believe there isnt some dealer in the usa that would stand tall and accept your msrp order. Dont talk to salesmen, talk to manager that understands the cyclic nature of his business. Ive not tried though… perhaps contact porsche usa for a dealer recommendation?

I have no love for the dealer network, they're mostly crooks, but you can't make a business model work, even a faulty one, when you're selling from empty shelves. I suspect the worm will turn, the dollar will speak, as it always does. Meanwhile, your clean 2015 911 with low miles is prolly worth more than you paid for it four years ago.

Yes but I can't wrap my head around paying the same if not more for one than I paid for my first home.
At this point in life I won't really see the upswing after the depreciation.
