WTF... no Dino oil at the Mart !!

Went to the Mart to pickup a couple of quarts of Walmart brand Dino 10W-40 for the lawn tractor. Lots of Synthetic and synthetic blend of every brand starting at 6-7$ s qt. After digging around finally found a couple of qts. of Valvoline 10W-40. Guess I should have seen this coming.

Fortunately I have 24 qts of Valvoline VR-1 20W-50 I picked up off WOOT.COM 5-6 months ago at about 1/2 price. Afraid to see what it is now.

Amazon has a 6 pack of the Valvoline VR-1 20W-50 for $25

Beat me to it. I just bought two jugs of high zinc for the Duc.

We need another Autozone closeout sale on VR1 for $1/qt.
I picked up 76 quarts...I'm down to about 10 now.

What is VR-1? Can it be used in import cars? And why are there deals? Is it on closeout or something?

I actually use 20w-50 always. It's usually harder to find wherever you go.

So, what's the deal with the extreme discounts? This looks like it would be expensive...

stevej37 01-23-2022 03:02 PM

If you look at the two pics above...you'll notice the label is different.
Valvoline needed to change the label....thus they discounted all their VR-1
AutoZone sold all their inventory for $1/qt until it was gone.

I had to go to 4 diff stores to get 76 quarts.

Amazon Basics Dino is 18.54 for 5 qts.

Synthetic High Mileage is 22.98 for 5 qts

My walmart is sporadic on almost everything lately.
Last week they were out of all eggs for three days. A couple days later...they were fully stocked on all grades.

try to find oil that is not 0-X, 5-x. maybe even 10-x

amsoil or FCP euro and never pay for oil again.

svandamme 01-24-2022 11:35 AM

huh???

how is 10w40 dino oil ?!?!

As far as I know and can read, the very fact that 2 weights are indicated, means it will be synthetic as dino oil can't do that!?!?

stevej37 01-24-2022 11:46 AM

^^^ Either one can be made in multiple weights.
The VR-1 pictured above would be a dino oil.
If it's synthetic...it must say it on the container.

svandamme 01-24-2022 12:05 PM

to my knowledge any multigrade, with mineral oil in it, would be called semi-synthetic
there's no full mineral multigrade oil, not possible.

EDIT, guess i was wrong then

why wouldnt you want synthetic oil?

its literally better at everything. all the time.

svandamme 01-24-2022 12:21 PM

some say, older engines tend to start leaking if you change from dino to synthentic

thats a sign the oil is better, and your engine is not sealed well. fix the seals, and enjoy better engine lubrication and less wear.

"Fix the seals"...easy to say, not so easy to do.
If the car has always used dino...why switch?

if you have a leaking engine, then you need to fix the seals one way or another. if your oil is solid, you'll have no leaks at all!

because synthetic is better for everything. less wear on cold starts, higher temp protection, longer change intervals, its better, pure and simple.
