I'm surprised that they are selling it with an inoperable ABS system and the vehicle height adjustment system not working.

sc_rufctr 02-02-2022 04:45 AM

Just gorgeous... I love everything about it and certainly one of the most desirable cars of all time.

Just in case anyone is interested... From the ad: "Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46".

Hey, I have that same stereo in my 911!

Of course they used a lot of instruments and switches in common with my regular old 85 911. I hope it sells for a few million. That will help raise the price of all the other 911s. ;)

Will be fun to watch. It has sat unused most of its life and I would guess would take quite a bit of work to get it ready to actually use. Seems like they've done the minimum maintenance rather than keeping systems in working order. That's probably ok for most buyers. I will never own something like this but it would drive me nuts to own a car that wasn't kept in working order.

aschen 02-02-2022 07:04 AM

already creeping towards 2mil with 12 days left, crazy times. I remember the good ol days of 5 years ago where 1 mil or so could buy most of the recent fantasy cars from my youth. Makes me almost not want to complete my plan of becoming an evil genius.

959s are a cool moment in time car, but don't do much for me. Seems not to far off a functional prototype for a plain ol pedestrian 993tt. f40 by contrast was its own unique thing and end of an era. I am sure the new 959 owner will have one of these as well though.

I find it bizarre. For a regular old ~35 year old used car, sure, a check engine light or inop system wouldn't be weird. But for a car that is that special and expensive, I'd assume that it would be kept in good working order.

I guess from one point of view, if you can afford to buy it, then you can afford to fix it, but the other side of that coin is if you own it, then you should be able to afford to get the thing fixed. It's not like its an '87 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. I would be surprised to find a McLaren F1 or Ferrari F40 with a bunch of broken stuff for sale.

Right, if I was uber rich, I'd probably have one as a moment in time pinnacle, but they haven't really excited me since they were pretty new. At the time, their technology and performance is what excited me, but to me, they haven't aged well. When they came out, I found the 959 much more exciting than the F40. Now, I actually prefer the M F1 and F F40.

I would prefer to have a GT1 to a 959. I would , however, love to have a CGT (even more than a GT1). I think the CGT is going to age better than the 959 or GT1, but ask me again in 20 years.

LWJ 02-02-2022 08:26 AM

Easily the most drooled over car of my youth.

911 Rod 02-02-2022 08:31 AM

It would be nice to be rich.

zakthor 02-02-2022 08:44 AM

I think I'm the right age to be hypnotized by this car but literally my first thought was that an f40 is infinitely and terrifyingly cooler. This just looks complicated and as scary as a model x in plaid mode.

pwd72s 02-02-2022 08:54 AM

Ahhh, fantasy.

You hear lots of folks say "be careful what you wish for" or "it will cause more trouble in your life than it's worth." I'm game to give it a go. Yep, lots of folks that go from avg to rich over night have issues. I'm betting that I could be smarter than those folks.

JavaBrewer 02-02-2022 09:58 AM

If you search the 911 section our former host Wayne has a extensive thread about the 959 he bought years ago. It too needed a bunch of maintenance, would not even hit full boost, that he was very meticulous to complete and document.

Laugh at "would rather have a GTI"...me too. The original first gen Mk1 :)

Seahawk 02-02-2022 10:44 AM

I never "got" the 959 from an esthetic standpoint. I think the first time I saw a picture of one was in an article with Bill Gates driving one on the track and I just found it odd looking...but I think the 964 was the apex of 911 air cooled evolution.

So there's that. That and I like Targa's:cool:

Proof that there is an a$$ for every seat.

I almost have my 997 back on the road, so my opinion may change!

You are not alone!

Always found it to be totally hideous looking.

Also agree on your other view. Never had much love for the 911 style after the early 90s. ( not that I'd turn a newer one down...)

Interesting, so for you 964>993.

I like the 964 well enough, but I think my heart belongs to the bellows bumpers cars, then the 993, then longhoods, then 964.

I also love targas. I understand why the coupe is more desirable (rigidity and weight) vs the open top cars. My first Porsche was a targa. The outward visibility was great, and I think the car looked great. It was also nice (not that I did it often) to be able to drop the top, but still be shielded from the buffeting wind that you get in a full convertible.

I've had the hardtop on my Boxster for about a year now. I don't really have any desire to take it off. I've even considered removing the soft top, but don't think I'm going to do that.

Owner has so much money he doesn't care if it's fixed and running right? Or bought the car, but couldn't afford to keep it up?

Either way, it's not at the top of my list of cars to buy when I hit the jackpot.

Correct, if I was going to spend $2mil on a car, it wouldn't be on a 959.
