Wife wants to drive a Porsche.......

My wife wants to drive a used Porsche SUV after driving my son’s Cayenne in California. My budget is only $45K (including sales tax + delivery) and mileage less than 50k miles. And just the basic SUV and not even a turbo motor. Would I be able to find a nice 2017 Cayenne under 50K miles for my budget?

Tony

No.

Start looking at Macans. Maybe an "S". But you're going to have to be more realistic about year and mileage.

Does she need, or want an SUV as large as the Cayenne?

A base Macan may well be in the budget as well and have a lot better gas mileage. It is not a good choice if you need the room of the Cayenne, or need to tow much of anything.

I want to say I paid around $50K ish for a 2016 Macan S with maybe around 28K miles around two years ago. The original owner just never drove it. The thing is fully loaded with all of the factory options including Sport Chrono, and Plus. I still don't know what all of the buttons do. The GF took it over on the trip home and hasn't surrendered it yet. I guess that means she likes it.

I had a Macan S. It was a great driving car and I highly recommend if she has her heart set on a Porsche. I found, I really don't like driving SUVs but I still think if thats what you want, it's a great choice.

My wife is driving a Toyota V8 4Runner and the two SUV’s she likes are the Mercedes GLE-350 and Porsche SUV (Cayenne or Macan). She drove my son’s Cayenne and likes the ride. We almost bought one in Monterey last November when we were vacationing there.

We have not tested or driven a Macan yet. This is another option to explore. It is just me and wife in the household. Our kids are all married with children.

No. We went to the Mercedes Benz dealership and looked for new GLA, GLB, & GLC 300. She did not like them. Too small for her. But was attracted by the GLE 350 in the shown room. But the sticker price is out of our budget. An option is to find an end of the lease car.

We are focus now on buying a GLE-350 (used) or a Porsche SUV (used) at the moment. As a 911 enthusiast, I like her to have a Porsche SUV since I got several 911 in the garage I hardly drive.

The Macan is the "small" Porsche SUV. It might be too small for her. A year ago, when we were looking at getting an SUV for the missus, we test drove some audis and a few mercedes GLC including an AMG GLC 43. That was fun!

You might be able to if you are patient enough and look at multiple sites. I just saw a 2016 base model at Carvana with 72K miles at 36k plus taxes and fees.

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/ctd/d/san-francisco-2016-porsche-cayenne/7438406356.html

If you want to deal with private parties, you might just find a 2017 with less than 50k miles.

I sold my 2011 Cayenne S but loved every minute of owning it. But I didn't drive it much during the pandemic...

Tony, if you have several 911’s, you don’t drive, in your garage, why not sell one, or two and your budget constraints just went out the window. FWIW my wife drives a Macan GTS. We bought it new in 2018. She loves it and won’t let me put her into a new one. Phenomenal car/suv. Picked up an addl warranty from Steingold Volvo so we are covered for 6 yrs or 60k addl miles.

My eldest son got the ‘87 coupe already and my ‘89 cabriolet next year. While my youngest son will have the ‘78 Targa, ‘77S, Trailex and 4 complete SC motors. So they are already allocated to my 2 sons. Since we were not able to travel abroad the last 2 years, we’re able to save $37K in the piggy bank plus my $8K balance in PayPal. So $45K is my disposal budget.

I have not driven a Macan so far and see what happens next. Thanks.

My wife loves her 2017 Macan base model more than any car she has ever had. It comfortably seats 3 passengers and we have had zero problems. She went to the Porsche web site to build the car she wanted. Back then it was just a few months before her car came in.

The base model is plenty fast enough for her, and it will get on the interstate with ease.

Glen,

2017 is the model year I am using as my reference point. What would be the price for a 2017 Macan base model with less than 45K miles? How many miles do you have on your Macan now? Thanks.

Take note guys. This, together with a supply shortage, is why all the cars (and every other toy out there) have gone up up up.

I'd tell my wife to hold off for a couple years. I sense that the pressure on prices will go down by then. People will travel again and supplies will catch up.

It is wise to pass on and not to sell an air cooled 911 to fund a depreciating asset like an SUV.

yeah, it's not use keepign redundant toy cars in the garage if that means the missus doesn't get the car she wants.. that's not a good road to take cause then you end up with "HALF" anyway

Let's face it, better to sell a toy car now and do damage control

So we have both a Cayenne ('15) and an Audi Q5 ('16) as our daily drivers (both diesels). I really like the Cayenne and its my daily, but to be honest, there are some days I prefer the Q5. Doubt you can find the Cayenne you describe in your budget, but you may be able to find a Q5. And I know the stories about Audis, but honestly, in 3+ years it has had zero issues other than getting a new battery. And if you get a diesel, basically the entire motor is under warranty until 120k miles or 10 years after the in service date.

Here's an example. $31k , one owner, reasonable mileage.

https://www.edmunds.com/audi/q5/2016/vin/WA1CVAFP1GA045620/?radius=500

P.S. The 3.0 litre turbo diesel in the Q5 is surprisingly snappy.

Those engine building classes are really paying off I see. . Just kidding Tony, looking forward to seeing you in April.

I have 2010 Cayenne GTS that I absolutely love. I urge you to look at '17 GTS's for the seats alone. They are one of the things that make a GTS special, and worth buying, over S and Turbo Cayennes. They are that good.
