How To Store A Spoon?
 

Houston is number 2 in murders currently. I am pretty sure we have it in us to claw our way to the top.

I had an incident the other morning on my way to work that has me considering carrying a weapon. A guy rode my arse for a half mile with his brights on, after we both made a right at a light I slowed to let him go past. I flicked my lights once he was in front of me. He began to slow and when I was nearly even with him he accelerated and cut me off with a brake check, I went around on the left and he accelerated. He passed and got a 1/4 mile ahead and he came to a stop. I was driving slow as I wanted to let him go. As I neared his SUV now parked in the road he was exiting his car, I squeezed around and left him after pulling into a store parking lot. I don't know his intention but it wasn't good.

So, I work in hospitals and conceal carry isn't an option. I don't want to leave in the car.

What options are you Pelicans using?
My daily driver will often be the 911 so not a secure place for a weapon.

A car is never going to be a secure spot, but since yours is a coupe, it's not too bad.

You can get a small "gun safe" that comes with a steel cable that would slip under a seat. The cable then goes around something like a seat rail or mount. It'll slow folks down unless they know it's there and are looking for it. No matter what you do with a vehicle, it's always possible for them to steal the whole vehicle. You may have just been wanting to let the guy know that he was running his brights, or you may have been annoyed and trying to convey that. Either way, this guy seems to have been in a mood and not liked it. You may want to avoid the light flashing in the future.

People are crazy. I assume you saw the recent thread where 2 different sets of numbnuts fired their gun through the windows of their own vehicle. :eek:

Forget about a spoon. You engaged in the participation of "play stupid games, win stooopid prizes" with an idiot, in a car that brings out the worst in idiots imo. It's hard to do, but just let it go in the future. I haven't always done that .... but I'm trying much harder :D.

I wouldn't worry about one person. If you think you need it, buy some pepper spray. I am starting to think that stuff is way better than a Taser, and I have two.

You definitely wouldn't want to fire pepper spray through your own windows (whether they were up or down) while driving a car, though. :D

It was a very helpless feeling with that dude trying to block the road, it was dark, deserted and he had paper plates. That is the texas equivalent of a car with a hoodie and mask, untraceable.

I haven't really felt the need to carry as I am usually not putting myself in situations (ie bar fights, domestic disputes) that gun play usually follows. Driving a red porsche will draw some attention but on this occasion I was in my nondescript kia soul.

^ I don't think I'd fire a gun either, unless it was not a firearm. Too much risk of hitting a person behind, even with target rounds. And if you're carrying hollow point, well good luck in court.

I got the Tasers because of people coming up to the car window. One guy tried to open my 911 door. That's the kind of person you shoot in the face with a 2" dart and 12,000 volts.

All I can offer is that you follow your State laws to the letter.

I "truck carry" in Maryland and Virginia, both have very specific requirements for the transportation of guns and ammunition.

I follow both to, as I mentioned, the letter. If I have a meeting in DC, I do not truck carry. Not worth it.

Lastly, you need to really rethink the spoon option. There are better options if you are not prepared.

^ All good advice. The obvious advice is to take a class. My advice would be to think in terms of 100% likely to shoot someone. Think about the repercussoins. Think about facing every imaginable news reporter, city employee, and for years later every smart aleck wiseass that will come out of the woodwork. Your shoot has to be defensible. And you had better take the least agressive option available. Dont think of it as hypethical. Think of it as routine and you'll understand what you can't even imagine.

30.06 and 30.07 are such a PITA and frankly very confusing statutes. I always have to re-read those signs when I go places and even then I'm not sure I get it.

What's worse is the new constitutional carry. I've had a few cases recently on folks w/o carry license and trying to apply the con-carry rules is crazy hard. I even heard on body cam video the cops, detective, and on-call DA saying they didn't get it.

WRT 30.06/.07 I wonder if the hospital would allow employees exceptions for to/from if you store in locker in the building. I'm in a similar boat with the courthouse, my office is about a block down the street, so for a block I'm on my own.

My concealed carry instructor, a close friend of mine, said to the entire group "don't let the fact that you can now legally carry a gun concealed change who you are".

I can confirm. Was riding in back of HUMVE once and guy in front pax seat fired some off to keep people away. I took a face full. It's great when your eyeball fells like it is going to fall out.

Or next time something like that happens you call 911 as it’s happening and tell the operator someone is acting in a way that threatens you and you let the people with badges who are paid to put their lives on the line take care of it. If it’s urgent enough to need a gun, it’s urgent enough to call 911. If you don’t feel comfortable dialing 911 you haven’t reached a point where a gun is necessary.

Yeah, I haven't had that situation, but a couple of times over the years that I've been here, I've had weird/corncerning situations occur. It's unsettling. And yes, driving a Porsche or any sports car seems to be able to trigger the weirdness.
Fortunately for bivenator, Texas recently passed a law so that anyone can CC without a license.
How are you going to get to the box or anything in or out of the box if it's bolted under the seat?

They make a lock box that opens like a drawer. It goes there when you go into work. It goes in the door pocket of the 911 when in route.

And have I ever mentioned that I love where I live?

I would not want to ask for permission unless I had a good reason to believe that approval was likely.

I believe colleges are now OK unless they have 30.06 or 30.07 posted if you have a license. I believe I've read that if you have a license there are a couple of places that you can go that you can't if you don't have a license (think college was one of those places, maybe the only difference, I can't remember).

It would be nice, if in your position, there was some sort of DMZ with lockers where lawyers and employees could go, leave their guns, and then go inside.

Yeah, my parents were smokers when I was a kid and stuck in the back seat with them "smoking out the window." Yeah, that worked great.

I was coming home from a bar once in college. A buddy was driving. I was in the passenger's seat and there were 2 or 3 people in the back seat. I tried to get my buddy to pull over to puke, but he said "just do it out the window". I felt really bad about the 2 people in the back seat. I didn't feel as bad about the state of the interior of his car in the back half.

Probably not a bad plan. Things are easy and tough in a car. In a car, you should be able to much more easily "run away" which should be the first course of action. If you're trying to get away, then making a call, unless you've got a phone integrated with your car and buttons on the steering wheel, might be tough.

If you think you need a gun, then it might be too late for 911.

This unfolded pretty quick, whether I could have been able to get my phone, position my thumbprint correctly and then dial 911 in that time frame while assessing whether I need to fight or flight. Maybe. There was a space after he initially brake checked me to where I passed him for good. I wasn't really interested in calling the cops because I needed to get to a safe area.

I think calling them at that time might have been prudent but we just had a situation where a guy lay in the street for a reported 2 hours after being shot before the cops arrived. Me calling in about a dirty gold tahoe with paper plates, well I understand there are more pressing calls.

I didn't have a lot of good choices that morning and this made me consider exercising my right to defend. i actually think that I would probably never flash my lights again if carrying because it is a huge responsibility and not one that I would take lightly. Or without proper training and maintaining.

Call 911 after you have made yourself safe. Again. It's no longer hypothetical, it is happening.

when carrying or driving with a gun, there's a lot of "what if" to think about, and it's not quick, easy answers. I've never used a fire extinguisher at home, and hope I never need to, but I want one around just in case. Guns are an absolute last, last resort. You've probably also got to worry that you wait too long.
Fortunately, in a car, I think it's usually easier since you can likely get away more easily (usually).

Get bumper to bumper with him in front. the quarter of your bumper against the outside quarter of his. He will naturally brake so you accelerate and he'll go off the road. If the police get involved he was in the wrong brake checking you. I used to work for our SIS and this was part of the training they gave us.

That's right. But once you're safe and/or the gunplay is over, the cops tend to believe the person who called them first. If the other guy took the room temperature challenge and can't call 911, even better. It's always best that the cops only hear your side of the story.

Glad I live in AZ, where there's not much ambiguity in carry laws. If you can legally own it, you can legally carry it, permit or no permit. Signs don't have the force of law (with some rare exceptions) unless you're first asked to leave and then refuse.

No worse idea out there. What are you gonna do once it wears off? What if you miss? What if you hit a bullseye and it has no effect? What if the bad guy is permanently disabled, but lives to sue you into the poor house? If you can legally use a Taser, you can legally kill the guy with a gun and ensure yours is the only story the cops hear.

I just generally stay away from people who obviously make bad life decisions. Like getting violently upset about how someone else is driving.

I’m still a very aggressive and fast driver but I don’t take other’s driving personally and as soon as someone takes mine personally, I disengage. Now that might mean accelerating to triple digit speeds but so be it.

Right, but I took the other poster to be saying, "instead of getting out your spoon , just call 911" which isn't that helpful if you think your life might be in danger.

You have some bad information (many times from the MSM who has an agenda). That said if you aren't going to properly understand handling a weapon, the laws in your state, and proper training, then it is better if you don't have a gun.

Because when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

Don't go looking for a fight. Unfortunately, the fight sometimes comes looking for you even when you don't want one.

Talk to the hospital. Tell them you want a place to safely store your firearm. Even the Alamo has this!

On the lock-box, you will only put it in the box when you are leaving the vehicle to go to a prohibited place. Otherwise you will have it accessible at all times.

Even though we CAN carry without a license, I suggest you go through the classes. They are quite informative on the law (primary purpose) and they do a life fire check to make SURE that you can hit the broad side of a barn.

of the 8 hour class, 4 hours are telling you what you should not do, 2 hours are selling you concealed carry insurance and 2 hours getting everyone to fire pistols/revolvers at the range. It is good to know the law AND to know what will happen IF you have to use your pistol.

I _THINK_ they eliminated the "revolver only" license. At one time, if you brought a revolver, they gave you a "special" limited license, revolver only.

Again, I would have a talk with the hospital security. Arrange a place for safe storage. I had to go to Port of Houston and make a delivery. I had my pistol with me. They had a "no firearms" policy. I said fine, where would you like to store my pistol? They had security store it. You can work it out.

When I took the class years ago, it was, I'm pretty sure 8 hours. I never had anyone hawking insurance to me. I heard some years later that it had been shortened to either 4 or 6 hours.

I was curious what the current deal is since the permitless carry went into effect.

Apparently now you can take it online. (you do still have to find someone local for the shooting portion).
